Average net circulation July 2024 to June 2025 22,797 Tales from my travels Last week, I was invited to the impressive setting of the RAC club in London, which is awash with motoring history. I was there to hear from the Verification of Lubricant Specifications, or VLS, a subsidiary of the United Kingdom Lubricants Association, about some of the work it has been doing to ensure that the oils you are putting into your customers’ engines actually meet the specifications they claim to be compliant with. It was encouraging to hear that the number of cases where an oil falls outside of its specification is relatively low, and that when one does, it is often rectified quickly. But it is reassuring to know that, if necessary, there is an organisation that will hold those manufacturing and selling oils to account. What stood out was how the days of one-size-fits-all are long past us. Oils are, in essence, a precision component and selecting the correct oil for its application is incredibly important. This is something we will expand on in a future issue of Aftermarket, so keep an eye out for it. I also had the pleasure of meeting the German and English teams, representing Frankfurt Messe, the organisers of Automachanika, taking place in Frankfurt later this year, and then here in the UK next year. And of course, the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event, which, as I type, is just two weeks away. The plans for Automechanika Frankfurt, taking place between 8 and 12 September, look very impressive. The event will focus heavily on future trends and how tech is driving the future of mobility, plus, there is a wide range of new features to support networking, including a pit-lane-themed area to attract motorsport interest, an offroad area, and areas for e-vehicles and other alternative-drive vehicles. We will be sharing more in-depth details of what you will find at the event in our next issue, so that is something else to look out for. Bringing things back to this issue, we have a great range of features, our usual spread of industry and product news, plus tips to support you in the day-to-day running of your business. Delphi – Built for Silence’, which it says is an industry-wide movement designed to raise awareness of the importance of choosing the right braking components in a market increasingly crowded with choices. Delphi says that at the heart of the campaign is its commitment to delivering braking solutions that are built for silence and consistent real-world performance. Engineered to OE standards, Delphi braking components are developed with application-specific friction materials, helping to optimise stopping distances, reduce noise and deliver a smooth, controlled driving experience. Delphi’s confidence in its product quality is backed by its no-quibble warranty. If a Delphi braking component is found to be faulty or produces unwanted noise, customers can claim a refund – with no questions asked. A key pillar of the campaign, according to Delphi, is its commitment to supporting workshops beyond the product itself. The new campaign is also promoting best practices in the workshop. Delphi continues to advise against the use of copper grease on modern braking systems, instead recommending purpose-designed brake lubricants to ensure cleaner, more reliable installations. Servicesure partnership RᎭHUV QHZ RQH GD\ FRXUVHV The government eases demands on businesses using H YDQV The Government is cutting red tape for businesses using e-vans, bringing them in line with petrol and diesel vans for the first time and reducing costs. E-vans weighing between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes will now be moved from heavy vehicle testing requirements to Class 7 MOT rules, meaning less strenuous tests, more flexibility, and savings of up to 60% on MOTs. From 1 June 2026, new electric vans in this weight class will only need their first MOT three years after registration, rather than one year. As e-vans are heavier than petrol and diesel vans, they have, until now, faced more stringent testing requirements than petrol and diesel vans of the same size.

News 8 www.aftermarketonline.net JUNE 2026 TMD Friction has completed a major solar installation at its Hartlepool production facility in the UK. The project, executed by supplier Geo-Green Power, features 1,468 solar panels covering 2,933m2 of roof space. The installation is expected to generate an estimated 590,000kWh of electricity annually, which will cover roughly 6% of the site’s total energy demand and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 150 tonnes per year. Integrated monitoring software allows the team to track the real-time performance of individual panels, ensuring proactive maintenance and optimised energy output. Commenting, Andrew Turner, Vice President of PC Europe at TMD Friction, said: “At Hartlepool, we’re not just generating cleaner energy, we’re embedding sustainability into the very fabric of our manufacturing operations”. TMD Friction advances green energy transition Celebrating 10 years of growth The comparison site for MOTs, servicing and repairs, BookMyGarage, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. BookMyGarage was founded by husband-and-wife team Douglas and Karen Rotberg, who still head up the business today. In 2018, the pair expanded the offering into the franchised sector with the launch of SecretService, a strategic solution that has helped franchise dealers win significant market share in the 4-year-old+ vehicle segment. In 2022, 5 million drivers had compared prices to book their servicing, MOT and repairs on its platform and today, that figure has risen to 26 million. Karen said: “We are extremely proud of our team, with some having been with us literally from the start. We are very much committed to steering the business through the next decade, and as the aftermarket continues to change, we plan to expand our use of data and technology to help garages compete more effectively in an increasingly digital market. Here’s to the next 10 years.” EVs’ share of the used car market grows, but accounts for just under 12% of the ageing parc While the UK’s used car market was flat overall during the first quarter of the year, down just -0.2% as 2,016,232 vehicles changed hands, transactions of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) grew by 32.0% to 86,943 units, as nearly one in 23 buyers (4.3%) made the switch, up from around one in 30 last year. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which recorded these figures, this growth is the result of sustained investment by manufacturers into new models, enabling a massive choice of new zero emission vehicles in every segment – supported by substantial discounts and government incentives – which are filtering into the used market in ever greater numbers. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales also rose, by 27.6% to 128,039 units, increasing their market share to 6.4%, while plug-in hybrid (PHEV) transactions fell by -8.9% to 20,021 units, comprising just 1.0% of the market. Combined, electrified vehicles accounted for 11.7% of used cars finding new owners in quarter one of 2026. Petrol remained the best-selling fuel type, despite transactions falling -0.6% to 1,147,969 units, while diesel demand experienced a -6.7% decline to 629,987 units, reflecting reduced supply from the new car market. Even so, conventionally fuelled cars still accounted for 88.2% of total transactions in the first quarter. Other trends which can be seen in the figures released by the SMMT include a small fall in sales of supermini vehicles (-1.0%), although at 648,229 units, they remained the most popular used purchase, accounting for 32.2% of the market. Lower medium was the next biggest segment, with 546,249 units changing hands, an increase of 0.2% to a 27.1% share. Dual-purpose vehicles saw the highest growth, up 5.4% to 357,295 units, while multipurpose vehicles experienced the sharpest decline, of -6.5%, to 69,886 units. The average age of the UK vehicle parc now stands at a new high of 9.7 years – up from eight years in 2019.

The new agreement represents a five-year extension to a decade-long partnership between the two companies, which will now run to 2030. Under the latest deal, Formula One Autocentre technicians will be supported with digital ordering, site-by-site-specific oils, remote diagnostics, and aircon coverage, adding to its existing access to LKQ’s 140,000-strong parts portfolio. The deal reaffirms LKQ Euro Car Parts’ position as tier one supplier to Formula One Autocentres across its 170 sites, following the recent acquisition of 35 ATS Euromaster branches. The deal follows LKQ’s six-year partnership extension as a first-line supplier of batteries, parts and paint to the AA, a four-year role as first-line supplier to IN’n’OUT Autocentres, and its appointment as a ‘tier one’ supplier to both the RAC’s Mobile Mechanics service and Approved Garages network. Opinion 10 www.aftermarketonline.net JUNE 2026 The technician role needs and deserves a rebrand Training investment is not optional Matt Wrankmore, Chief Customer Officer at FixMyCar, explains why he believes training is the most important investment independent workshops can make and outlines options for removing the barriers that make implementation challenging. Vehicle technology is advancing rapidly, particularly with electric-vehicle adoption and increasingly software-driven diagnostics. This has led to demands on technicians shifting faster than traditional training models can keep up. There is good news, though, as it seems auto repair technicians are not resting on their laurels. The IMI’s report from late 2025 shows an increase in auto repair qualifications, up 12% from the previous year. Within our own network, 31% of FixMyCar garages surveyed said they had undertaken some form of formal training in the last 12 months, with EV-related training being the most common. The IMI reported similar findings, highlighting an increase in demand for EV and ADAS skills and projecting that this demand may even outpace the supply of these courses. It’s a very positive sign that there is not only an awareness within the industry of how much is changing, but also a proactivity around keeping up with those changes through training. Despite this, there are still big concerns around skills gaps in auto repair. The same IMI report showed that auto repair apprenticeship starts were down 6% from last year and have still not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Our industry’s ageing workforce is discussed often, so these statistics are particularly concerning when new, young talent is so desperately needed. Struggling to keep up Perhaps one of the reasons a career in auto repair is struggling to catch the attention of the younger generation is that, as an industry, we have been slow to embrace digitalisation and keep up with technological change. Advancing tech has outpaced the skills pipeline, and as a result, only a quarter of our workforce is qualified to work on electric vehicles, according to The IMI. Now industry training is struggling to keep up, not only with new technology but also with the demand from a workforce that is realising investment in training is critical. While the rising demand for training in electronic-first courses is positive, we know that independent garages are under immense pressure to meet current demand with recruitment challenges, which makes it difficult to release technicians for time-consuming training sessions, no matter the long-term benefits. Our industry’s current approach to training is reactive, when it needs to be a continuous, strategic investment if we are to solve our current skills gap issue. The commercial impact While the barriers to training and apprenticeships are significant and impacting auto repair’s ability to evolve faster, there are still plenty of great training courses out there for those who want them. We have reached a point where falling behind in skills and training will have a direct commercial impact on workshops. A lack of up-to-date expertise will lead to increasingly inefficient work and longer repair times. Lacking proficiency in advanced diagnostic tools, which are increasingly common in cars, means that they will be filling your bays for longer, creating bottlenecks that cost you time and money. There are also significant missed revenue opportunities as modern, complex vehicles require this specialised knowledge, without which you may miss out altogether or have to outsource the work, reducing profit margins. Practical solutions At this risk of sounding too much like my friends in marketing, I believe the technician role needs and deserves a rebrand. Just like the rest of the industry, the role of the technician has evolved. From mechanics and electrical systems to software diagnostics and bodywork repairs, technicians can do it all. That is the image that will attract the younger generation and fill workshops with people hungry for learning. But first, we have to create that culture of learning. Luckily, it’s already started. The increased demand for training being reported is exciting and has great potential. Building a training system into your workshop culture will ensure that all technicians get a fair shot at upskilling, as well as ensuring you never fall behind in skill. While there are many great training programmes out there, long and expensive courses are not always a practical option for smaller businesses. Instead, try adopting modular learning that’s easier to fit into busy schedules. Bosch’s Automotive Training Solutions is a great example of bitesized courses ranging from 30 minutes to two days that will enhance your team. Alternatively, you could introduce a mentor program, pairing new, young technicians with senior staff for handson, contextual learning. Whatever solution you choose, one thing is clear. Business 12 www.aftermarketonline.net JUNE 2026 Remanufactured parts: changing the conversation in the workshop As the availability of remanufactured components grows, Aftermarket spoke with Tomasz Galazka, Head of Global Remanufacturing Strategy and Business Development at ZF Aftermarket, to understand the benefits of using remanufactured components and how those benefits can be reinforced with customers. For many independent garages, remanufacturing still sits in a slightly awkward place. It clearly offers something – lower cost, a more sustainable repair, and better availability – but some customers remain hesitant. The idea that it is simply a second-hand part, and therefore somehow a compromise, has not entirely gone away. What garages are fitting, though, is not a reused component in the traditional sense, but one that has been through a controlled, industrial process designed to bring it back to original equipment (OE) standard. ZF Aftermarket’s remanufactured units, for example, are validated and tested in much the same way as new parts, with the same quality benchmarks, audit processes and endof-line testing applied. In fact, in one case, one of ZF’s products underwent 18 months of continuous testing before it was released to market. “We bring the components to the same standard as OE products, like new, and sometimes better,” Tomasz Galazka, Head of Global Remanufacturing Strategy and Business Development at ZF Aftermarket, said. That is a useful line for workshops to hold onto, because it reframes the conversation. This is not about compromise. It is about delivering OElevel performance in a different way. It is also worth being clear that remanufacturing is not suitable for every component, and being upfront about that helps build credibility. Larger mechanical parts and complex mechatronic units tend to offer the most value, where the original manufacturing effort and material content can be recovered. By contrast, low-cost or high-wear items such as brake pads or certain sensors are often cheaper to replace than to remanufacture. That balanced view matters because one of the biggest challenges is not resistance from customers but understanding. Many vehicle owners do

Business 13 www.aftermarketonline.net JUNE 2026 not clearly distinguish between repair, reuse and remanufacture. In practice, that puts the responsibility on the workshop to explain the options properly. Handled well, remanufacturing becomes a straightforward value proposition. The customer is offered a component that performs like new, carries the same warranty, and typically comes at a saving of around 10 to 25%. Alongside that sits the environmental benefit, with less raw material required and a clear contribution to a more circular approach to vehicle repair. A shared effort Of course, none of this works without a functioning supply chain, and this is where remanufacturing becomes a shared effort. Fundamental to that is the core return process. Without a steady flow of used components coming back into the system, there is nothing to remanufacture. As Tomasz puts it, “if we have no cores, there is no reman business.” For garages, this is where a bit of care goes a long way. Components need to be removed cleanly, stored properly and returned in good condition. Damage, contamination or missing parts can all affect whether a unit can be successfully remanufactured, and ultimately that feeds back into availability for the wider market. Looking ahead, the role of remanufacturing is only set to grow. ZF’s own portfolio has expanded from around 5,000 to more than 7,300 part numbers in the space of a year, a clear indication of both demand and investment in this area. For independent garages, the opportunity is relatively simple. Customers are already open to cost savings, and, increasingly, to more sustainable choices. What they need is clarity and confidence. Remanufacturing is no longer something to justify – it is something to offer with confidence. Once that shift happens, the conversation becomes much easier. The landscape for independent garage owners is shifting from a recruitment crisis to a significant legal liability challenge. With major legislative changes taking effect, automotive businesses are being urged to professionalise their HR infrastructure to protect themselves from rising litigation costs. Failure to do so is no longer classed as a legal risk; it is being described as a financial risk. In April 2026, the government began funding a new enforcement body (The Fair Work Agency) that assists employees in pursuing claims regarding pay, annual leave, and fair treatment. Compounding this risk, employment law updates scheduled for October will double the statute of limitations for employment tribunals, allowing former staff up to 6 months to file a claim after their departure. In this high-stakes environment, manual record-keeping and informal agreements are becoming a significant business risk. “The legal burden of proof has shifted entirely onto the employer,” said Jennifer Webb, Founder of HR Vitals. “It is a day one mandate to provide a contract of employment, but in a tribunal, simply issuing it isn’t enough; you must have evidence to prove you are a fair employer. With the tribunal window doubling to six months, having accessible, airtight documentation of every disciplinary action and policy update is now a business necessity. You also want to prove that employees know the company processes, such as who is responsible for checking the vehicle is safe for customer collection” Beyond litigation defence, the industry is facing another drain on capital from lost training investment. On average, garage owners invest £8,000+VAT in training a senior technician. Without robust, legally binding training agreements and contracts in place from the start of employment, that investment can be lost if a technician moves to a competitor. The company says this is due to growing frustration over poor return on investment, unresponsive service, and ineffective online strategies. Recent onboarding data from Garage Services Online (GSO) indicates a shift in sentiment, with many workshops reporting that generalist providers lack the industry expertise needed to deliver meaningful commercial results. “Garage owners are telling us they don’t just want a nice-looking website,” said Jim Lang, Managing Director at Garage Services Online. “They want a partner that understands how their business operates, how customers search, and how to turn that activity into profitable work. That’s where many generic agencies fall short.” The value of sector knowledge A consistent theme emerging from the data is the lack of garage-specific knowledge. Workshops say previous providers failed to grasp the realities of the automotive aftermarket, leading them to seek specialists who, as one put it, “know the automotive industry, as opposed to just knowing websites”. A one-size-fits-all approach has also driven dissatisfaction. Several reported paying substantial monthly fees for websites and campaigns that generated little or no new business, while one owner said that even after completing a full training programme, the return on investment remained inadequate. “The expectation has changed,” said Jim. “Garage owners are far more commercially aware. Diagnostic Doctor 16 The Diagnostic Doctor tackles body control modules In our new series, the Diagnostic Doctor, Aftermarket Magazine is focusing on real-world technical problems brought to our readers by their customers. Below, we look at an issue in which a customer with a 2017 Ford Fiesta complained that their driver’s-side front window wasn’t working, and we walk through the diagnostic steps needed to identify the cause. Acustomer with a 2017 Ford Fiesta comes into the workshop complaining that their driver’sside front window isn’t working. At first glance, this could involve a failed motor, a faulty switch, wiring damage or a module failure. Traditional diagnosis might involve removing trim panels and chasing wiring – a time-consuming process with no guarantee of a quick answer. However, on newer vehicles that use body control modules, complex diagnosis starts with understanding inputs, outputs and data flow rather than chasing wires. In these cases, a diagnostic scanning tool is necessary. So, with our Snap-on Triton Gen 3 scan tool connected, step one should be a pre-scan of the vehicle. In this example, no diagnostic trouble codes were present. So next, we accessed the driver’s door module on the scan tool, and step two is to use functional tests. We navigated to: Functional Tests > Actuator tests > Front window down output. From here, the window motor can be commanded ON or OFF directly from the scan tool. To simplify analysis, we used the ‘Custom Data List’ feature, deselected all parameters and selected only ‘Drivers window up’ switch and ‘Drivers front window switch – Drivers door’. Returning to the list view,

Diagnostic Doctor 17 you can see just the live data for the front window. Then, by simply toggling the on/off functions, you’ll see the ON/OFF status change. So, using the functional test to activate the ‘Window motor down’ function, we have verified that half of the circuit is working. This is good news, as now we know that everything between the driver’s door module (DDM) to the motor is working when it is commanded ‘On’ from the scan tool, therefore there is no need to check the motor, chase the wires on the harness, or verify the output of the DDM is functioning, in around a minute we’ve verified that one half of the system is operating as intended and already saved a ton of time. Moving on, step four is to verify the input side by checking the data stream. From here, the switch data confirmed a correct ‘Up’ signal from the switch to the DDM (and the window went up), but when the switch is pressed down, there was no confirmation of a ‘Down’ signal/request at the DDM. Possible issues could be the switch, the wiring or the DDM, but now we know where to look. Checking the data helps to verify the input side. In this case, the DDM is not receiving a down signal from the switch. As the up signal is on the same LIN (Local Interconnect Network) bus wire, this rules out a wiring issue. And so we have narrowed things down to the switch. Step five is to complete the repair by replacing the switch. After replacement, operate the switch again, observe the correct ON/OFF status in the data and confirm the window operation visually This confirms correct system operation without unnecessary component testing. Verifying inputs and outputs using your scan tool will save a ton of time removing panels, chasing wires, etc. Body electrical faults no longer require hours of trim removal and wiring checks. By understanding how modern body control systems operate – and using scan tool data and functional tests effectively – technicians can isolate faults quickly and confidently. Taking charge of the future In this month’s Garage Focus, Chris Callander spoke with Matt Eeles of Essex-based Saffron Autos about the business’s journey into becoming a respected EV repair specialist. For many independent garages, electric vehicles still feel like tomorrow’s problem. At Saffron Autos, Matt Eeles decided some time ago that tomorrow was already on the ramp. The family-run business, based in Saffron Walden, has been trading for 38 years. Matt joined at 16 and, now 45, has spent nearly three decades watching vehicle technology change around him. And over the years, the business has invested to stay ahead of the curve. So, for Matt, the move into EVs was not really a dramatic leap. It was the next step. Taking the first step Matt began his journey into EV repairs with the Institute of the Motor Industry’s training, and he reached Level 4. Like many busy garage owners, he admits he started Level 4 once before but did not finish it, partly because the format at the time required a lengthy dissertationstyle element. When he later found a course that wrapped the assessment into four intensive days, he signed up and completed it. That training, he said, is essential, but it is only the starting point. One of the early challenges was that after initial training on hybrid and EV systems, work did not immediately arrive in large numbers. “You do the training, then you might not see anything for over a year,” Matt said. “Then something comes in, and you think, ‘I can’t remember.’” Thankfully, that is now changing. Saffron Autos is seeing more EV and hybrid work, particularly diagnostic jobs. And as well as direct customers, the garage also receives referrals from other workshops that simply do not want to touch hybrid or electric vehicles. Training, tools and backup Matt is clear that garages should not jump in without the right preparation. Training comes first. Then comes the basic safety equipment, insulated tools, signage, barriers and personal protective equipment. However, he is keen to stress that this does not all need to happen in one painful hit. “You build up your toolbox while you’re building up your knowledge,” he said. “There are kits out there, and if you buy them all in one lump, it can look expensive. We’ve built it up over time.” The other key part of the puzzle for Saffron Autos has been technical backup. Matt is a member of HEVRA (the Hybrid and Electrical Vehicle Repair Alliance), which he describes as a must-have for garages getting into hybrid and EV work. Through the network, garages can submit

Garage focus 19 www.aftermarketonline.net JUNE 2026 vehicle details, fault codes, symptoms, and live data, and then receive support, test plans, and guidance. That support has helped Matt take on jobs with more confidence, including work that has already been through the dealer network. One example was a Porsche that had been to a main dealer, had a component replaced, but was still not fixed. Saffron Autos traced the fault to a motor on the gearbox, removed the gearbox, fitted the replacement unit and got the vehicle running again. Confidence is the real barrier There is no pretending the work is identical to what most garages are used to. High-voltage systems require a different mindset, stricter safety discipline and a clear process. And Matt said the fear is understandable: “You know you’ve made it safe, but in the back of your mind you’re still touching these wires and thinking about the voltage”. For him, though, the confidence comes from procedure. The vehicle is made safe, the team is aware of what is happening, the area is controlled, and the correct tools are used. He is currently the only member of the team fully trained to that level, but the next step is to train other technicians so the capability does not rest solely with him. That is an important point for any garage considering the move. EV work does not have to become the whole business overnight. Saffron Autos has grown into it gradually. One of the big opportunities, Matt believes, is that EV customers are starting to look beyond the dealer. As vehicles get older and faults become more common outside the warranty period, owners are searching for independent specialists who can diagnose properly, rather than simply replace expensive assemblies. He gave the example of a Tesla Model S with a blown fuse caused by a faulty positive-temperature-coefficient heater. Tesla’s approach to this issue is to drop the battery to replace the fuse, which is a big job. Matt was able to work in a very tight area through the bulkhead area to access the fuse, test it and then replace it. That, really, is where the independent sector has always been strong: taking the time to diagnose, repair where possible and give customers confidence. The technology may have changed, but the principle has not. Advice for other garages Matt’s advice to other independent garages is simple: do not ignore it, but do not rush in blindly either. Find a training provider that suits the way you learn. Do the training properly. Keep revisiting the material afterwards. When a hybrid or EV comes in for ordinary service work, plug in, look at data, learn the control units and get familiar with what normal looks like before you are faced with a fault. He also pushes back against the idea that there is no money in EV work. “People will say there’s no money in it,” Matt said. “There is money in it. There’s a lot to learn, but there’s a lot of satisfaction too. You’re doing things other garages can’t do or won’t take on.” In fact, Saffron Autos is now busy enough that Matt is considering whether a separate unit focused on hybrid and EV work could be the next move. A technician’s mindset That desire to keep learning also links back to another part of Matt’s story. In 2016, he won a Top Technician award. He admits he probably could have done more to promote the win at the time, but it still brought benefits. It gave customers confidence, helped reinforce his standing within the workshop, and showed the rest of the team that they were learning from someone who had been properly tested.
