Small residential systems usually operate at lower power levels, but the grid interface may be single-phase 230 V or three-phase 400 V depending on country, grid arrangement, and installation. EV and high-voltage battery interfaces generally require galvanic isolation, so DAB or CLLC may be used for the isolated bidirectional DC-DC stage. Silicon devices can be sufficient at modest power levels, while GaN can be attractive in lower-power, highfrequency designs. Medium-power commercial systems, including Level 2 EV chargers, small-scale microgrids, and building applications aligned with nearly zero energy targets, often operate from a three-phase 400 V supply and demand higher efficiency, power density, and thermal performance. The grid-facing stage may use totem-pole PFC where lower component count and cost are priorities, although EMC and control complexity must be managed. As power levels and three-phase requirements increase, Vienna bridge topology becomes more common. DAB and CLLC suit the isolated bidirectional DC-DC stage, while SiC often becomes preferred for efficiency, thermal performance, and compact design. At higher power levels, such as EV fast chargers, industrial energy storage, and critical backup power, systems may operate with DC bus voltages of 1000 V to 1200 V or higher and must maintain efficiency under demanding electrical and thermal conditions. Vienna bridge and other multilevel or interleaved power conversion architectures become more prominent on the grid-facing stage, while multi-phase or interleaved DAB and CLLC resonant conversion are relevant for isolated bidirectional DC-DC conversion. SiC MOSFETs and IGBTs, including highervoltage SiC devices, help achieve compact, high-efficiency designs. Designing for Scale That is why BDC is becoming central to zero-emission buildings: it supports more efficient energy use and helps extend energy storage into a wider range of applications. For zero-emission buildings, designers need to consider topology, semiconductor selection, control strategy, and safety design together. Avnet Silica provides the tools, expertise, and components necessary to design and scale BDC systems for a wide range of applications, from home energy systems to grid-scale solutions. 1 https://energy.ec.europa.eu/topics/ energyefficiency/energy-performance-buildings/nearlyzero-energy-and-zero-emission-buildings_en To receive your own copy of Power Electronics Europe subscribe today at: www.power-mag.com Grow your reach with connections from our qualified global database machines&factories E-campaign | List Rental | Lease | Lead Generation Damien Oxlee T: +44 (0)1732 370342 E: damien.oxlee@dfamedia.co.uk
