Any pressurised system has the potential to generate sufficient force to penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. The true severity of these incidents is often hidden beneath the surface. Once injected, the substance can travel rapidly through tissue planes, causing extensive internal damage, infection, loss of blood supply and tissue necrosis. In severe cases, the outcome can be permanent disability, loss of function or amputation. Because the external wound may appear insignificant, treatment is often delayed, significantly increasing the risk of long-term injury. The BFPA continues to reinforce a critical industry safety message: Every suspected pressure injection injury must be treated as a medical emergency The severity of a pressure injection injury cannot be determined by visual inspection alone. Significant internal trauma may occur even when only a small puncture wound is visible. Immediate assessment and treatment by medical professionals experienced in injection trauma is essential, as delays in specialist intervention can dramatically increase the risk of irreversible tissue damage and limb loss. Raising Awareness Through Training To help improve understanding of this potentially lifechanging hazard, the BFPA offers its Pressure Injection Injury Awareness Online Learning Module. Completed in approximately 30 minutes, the module covers: 4 How pressure injection injuries occur 4 Recognising warning signs and symptoms 4 Safe working practices around pressurised systems 4 Emergency response procedures 4 The importance of immediate specialist medical treatment By increasing awareness and understanding, organisations can help reduce the risk of serious injury, improve emergency response and potentially save limbs and lives. Never judge a pressure injection injury by what you can see on the surface A tiny, seemingly harmless puncture wound may be the only visible sign of a devastating injury occurring beneath the skin. Although relatively rare, pressure injection injuries can result in permanent disability, amputation, or even death if not recognised and treated immediately. Pressurised fluids can penetrate deep into the body, causing extensive tissue destruction long before symptoms fully appear.
