British Fluid Power Association 2023

Four pillars: Business Intelligence/Industry Insights The BFPA’s strategy review in 2021, facilitated by Joanna Ramsdale of People Puzzles, allowed us and our membership to discuss and share ideas on how the Association could further enhance the service it provides. Joanna categorised the attendees based on personality-trait profiles. This proved to be successful in creating balanced teams that could generate fruitful debates among members. Because the discussions were encouraged to be as open and honest as possible, members of the BFPA were excluded from these discussions. This was a logical move that resulted in the debates being completely unfettered. It became clear from this exercise that the statistics work carried out by the BFPA was viewed as being of considerable value to the membership, particularly for manufacturers. We were also able to collect a wide range of ideas and suggestions for how we might further improve this value. As referenced in other articles in this edition of the BFPA Yearbook & Members’ Directory, one of the key outcomes of the strategy review was the decision to focus some of the Association’s activities on four strategically-focused pillars, one of which – Business Intelligence/Industry Insights – I head as Team Leader. I am supported by a team of participants from other BFPA member companies, who have all kindly agreed to take time out from their day jobs to share their knowledge and experience in these areas. Mission statement We developed a mission statement for this pillar, endorsed by the BFPA Board, which is ‘to make BFPA business intelligence more user friendly and relevant to members’ needs’. In this regard, our strategy group will discuss this theme in depth over the coming months to formulate a clear roadmap as to how to move things in this direction. Initially, it was planned that our strategy group be titled Statistics/Industry Insights. However, I felt the term ‘statistics’ is not wholly indicative of what we really strive to offer within the strategy group, namely business intelligence that provides valuable actionable information and insights to members. So, the term Business Intelligence was applied instead.
