Bruno Fita: When joining titanium to itself or different alloy, is it done in an argon atmosphere? Justin Johnson: Can Grade 5 Titanium be friction welded to 17-4PH? Would you think there be a special process or follow the standard process? John Fischer: Titanium is very weldable and so is 17-4PH. I would think that they could be friction welded without a problem using standard machines. Justin Johnson: Is there a typical minimum length for each component in rotary welding? My specific need would have a pc of 17-4 about 1-5/8in OD x 16in long, welded to a pc of Grade 5 Titanium that is 2-7/8in OD x 6in long. Jayne Shimwell: Hi Justin, your component lengths are perfectly suitable for friction welding with the correct machine. We have a M15T that would accommodate these dimensions. Justin Johnson: If I have a “Tee” shaped body and need to add a Raised Face Weld Neck flange, would that be possible? It would effectively be a tube-to-tube weld without being able to rotate the “Tee” shape. Kate Franklin: Hi Justin, yes the process could be used to add a flange, only one of the two workpieces is required to rotate. Justin Johnson: Thank you so much. These parts can weigh up to 185lb and be 18in long x 20in wide at the point where the flange would join. What is the driving factor in choosing a machine? Justin Johnson: These would typically have to pass both radiographic and hydro pressure load testing. Justin Johnson: Do you have a rep in the Mid West US, specifically Oklahoma? John Fischer: We are located in Wisconsin
