With decades of experience in the fluid power sector, Nigel brings together deep industry knowledge and a forwardlooking vision focused on innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth. Nigel is no stranger to the Association. Over the years, he has served as Chairman and both Board and Council Member, giving him a unique perspective on the BFPA’s strengths and challenges. This experience now positions him perfectly to guide the Association forward with a bold, purpose-driven strategy. A Vision for the Future Nigel’s message is clear: the BFPA must adapt to remain at the heart of the industry. Through consultation with members, he has defined a path that focuses on creating value, strengthening influence, and unlocking new opportunities for growth. A recent SWOT analysis highlighted the Association’s solid foundations – strong branding, technical expertise, training programmes, and a loyal member base – while also identifying areas for development, such as digital engagement, visibility, and succession planning. Nigel is determined to tackle these challenges head-on. Opportunities to Seize The UK fluid power market is estimated at £1.4–1.6 billion, with expanding opportunities in hydrogen, motion control, defence, and automation. Even modest growth in these areas could generate billions in value for BFPA members. Although trade association membership is at an all time high we believe there is still significant room to expand. For Nigel, stronger collaboration between government, academia, and industry will be key to unlocking this potential. A Unified Voice Above all, Nigel believes that progress depends on unity. By aligning the board, members, and partners behind a shared strategy, the BFPA can reinforce its position as the leading organisation for workforce development, sustainability, and future-ready engineering. Looking Ahead As Nigel takes the reins, the BFPA is not only continuing its vital work but also repositioning itself as the central hub for innovation, skills, and sustainable growth in the UK fluid power sector. His leadership marks the start of a new chapter one where the BFPA is ready to “lead the charge” into a future full of opportunity. “I’m honoured to step into the role of Managing Director at the BFPA. Having worked closely with the Association for many years, I’ve seen the passion and commitment of our members first-hand. I’m excited to work alongside the team and our members to strengthen the BFPA’s impact and help drive innovation, skills, and growth across the industry.” Nigel Thomason, Managing Director “It gives me great pleasure to welcome Nigel as the BFPA’s new Managing Director. His knowledge of the industry and his dedication to the Association over many years make him exceptionally well-placed to lead us forward. I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to expand our support for members and drive the BFPA into an exciting future.” Martin Kingsbury, Director of Membership & Learning Development
