completed in a single afternoon, enabling operations to resume later the same day. Solution The project involved a complete overhaul of the pump room, including the installation of new flooring to accommodate the replacement power packs and associated pipework. A final shutdown period of one day was scheduled to integrate the auxiliary power packs, which were required to control the leg stabilisation pressure and auxiliary conveyor systems. Three Flowtech engineers worked through the night to complete the installation, conduct final tests, and commission the system. Outcome The project was completed well within the allocated timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to site operations. As a result, the client was able to plan further engineering projects with Flowtech’s involvement. Aggregate Industries commended Flowtech’s engineers for their high level of skill, attention to detail, and professionalism throughout the process. The successful completion of the project has strengthened the partnership between the two companies, paving the way for future collaboration. www.hpmag.co.uk HYDRAULICS & PNEUMATICS January/February 2025 25 Flowtech provides support to businesses by offering: Optimised operational efficiency: Access to a wide range of industry brands, reliable stock availability, and supplier coordination, alongside technical expertise. H&P reports. Flowtech has evolved from a collection of independent fluid power product distribution and engineering repair businesses into a unified solutions provider. Supported by seven engineering centres and extensive fulfilment capabilities, It has established itself as a trusted partner for businesses requiring technical expertise and engineering solutions. This case study highlights the company’s role in diagnosing and resolving a hydraulic system fault at Torr Works Quarry, demonstrating its commitment to efficient problemsolving and minimal operational disruption. Challenge Flowtech was approached by Aggregate Industries to investigate a fault in the hydraulic power pack of a stone crusher at Torr Works Quarry. Upon diagnosis, engineers identified an issue with one of three primary hydraulic pumps, each driven by a 160kW electric motor. The affected pump exhibited significantly reduced performance and failed to swash to the correct position. As a result, the crusher’s three supporting feet were lifting unevenly, causing operational instability. Given that the crusher stands six stories high, this posed a considerable challenge. The objective was to identify a suitable solution while minimising downtime and disruption to site operations. Concept After reviewing system drawings and assessing available solutions, the Flowtech team proposed the installation of three new hydraulic power packs. As there was no in-house capability to execute a project of this scale, Flowtech was tasked with the full implementation. Once the concept was approved, the team removed the existing power packs and was allocated a two-week window in which the crusher could be taken offline for installation. To maintain stability during this period, an auxiliary power pack was fitted, and the main service lines to the hydraulic cylinders were capped. This allowed the lift cylinders to be pressurised to 70 Bar, ensuring the crusher remained stable. Due to the team’s efficiency, this critical stage was
