The components use the magnetic force produced by permanent magnets to provide non-contact power transmission. Because there is no direct contact between tooth surfaces, no wear particles are generated, making magnetic gears particularly suitable for cleanrooms and other contamination-sensitive applications. Because the gear surfaces do not touch, there is no need for lubrication, cutting running costs and the need for maintenance, while eliminating the risk of contamination. Vibration and noise caused by tooth collisions and friction is avoided, resulting in quieter, smoother operation than mechanical gears. Magnetic gears can also tolerate a degree of centre distance variation, angular misalignment and positional offset, simplifying assembly and maintenance. The gears have a torquelimiting function. When the load exceeds the allowable torque, magnetic slippage occurs, preventing excessive torque transmission. This helps to protect motors and other equipment from overloads. No mechanical torque limiters are needed, simplifying designs. The magnets demagnetise at just 0.1% per year. The impact on transmitted torque is negligible, enabling stable transmission over long periods of time. The motors deliver efficiencies of up to 98%, with high torque and power densities, for applications such as shaft generators and marine propulsion. The motors are available in geared and direct-drive configurations, in frame sizes 500 and 710, with power ratings up to 5MW. ABB says that larger frame sizes are feasible, allowing the platform to scale with future requirements. The motors can be used with ABB drives. The water-jacket cooling system, combined with an optimised mechanical structure, provides good thermal performance without needing external fans or top coolers. As well as cutting mounting volumes by up to 60%, vertical heights can be 30-40% shorter than conventional alternatives, while weighing 5-15% less. The motors have enclosed rotors, advanced magnet protection, and a patented technology to prevent corrosion. The inner-loop cooling architecture is said to improve temperature stability around the magnet modules and coil ends, enhancing resistance to demagnetisation, and reliability. The AL1602 master combines flexible I/O configuration, high output current, and IP67 protection. The multiprotocol interface allows it to be integrated into different fieldbus architectures without changing the hardware, thus supporting standardisation and reducing engineering effort. The device is part of a new generation of decentralised IO-Link masters in ifm’s AutomationLine series. It addresses the challenge of reducing engineering effort while maintaining flexibility across different control architectures. By combining communications, power supply and configuration in a field-mounted device, the AL1602 helps to standardise machine designs and reduce the number of variants needed. It provides eight IO-Link ports supporting class A and B, with 16 freely configurable digital inputs and outputs. The channels can be configured and operated flexibly to match the application. A current rating of up to 2A per output makes the master suitable for direct control of motorised rollers, conveyor drives, diverters and stoppers.
