Early Foundations (1928–1950s) Beatson Fans & Motors Ltd began in 1928, founded by Herbert (“Bert”) Beatson in a small rented lock up on Stanley Street, Sheffield. With just one employee and trading as Beatson & Company, Herbert built the business on two principles he lived by: Quality & Service and treating people well. By 1929, the company had already outgrown its first home and moved into part of a building on Mowbray Street owned by the Hope & Anchor Brewery. As Herbert’s reputation grew, so did the business — he rented more and more of the building until eventually occupying the entire site. In 1954, he purchased the premises outright, securing the company’s long term base. Incorporation and Expansion (1960s–1990s) In 1960, Herbert retired. The business was incorporated and renamed Beatson & Co (Electrical) Ltd, with Herbert remaining the largest shareholder. His son Kenneth (Ken) Beatson became Managing Director, and his wife Helen became Company Secretary and Office Manager. Ken was a respected figure in the industry, serving as Chairman of the AEMT (Association of Electrical & Mechanical Trades) from 1972–1974. The third generation arrived in 1984, when Ian Beatson took over. Ian pushed the company into a period of aggressive growth, including importing motors into the UK — sometimes sacrificing his own pay to keep the business ahead of competitors. His leadership cemented the Beatson name as a trusted national supplier. Modern Era (2000–Present) In 2000, the company adopted its current name, Beatson Fans & Motors Ltd, replacing the earlier Beatson & Company (Electrical) Ltd. In 2005, the company moved from its historic Mowbray Street home to Newhall Road, where it still operates today. In 2007, Tom Beatson became Managing Director, representing the fourth generation of family leadership. Under Tom, the company has adapted to major changes in technology, legislation, and environmental standards while maintaining the same values Herbert set in 1928. Beatson remains an active member of the AEMT (since 1956) and continues to serve a remarkably wide range of customers — from steelworks and universities to rock bands, film studios, and food manufacturers. Company Ethos and Values Beatson’s long standing ethos— established by Herbert Beatson—centres on “Quality & Service”, honesty, trust, respect, proactivity, and pride. These values remain central to the company’s identity and customer relationships. Beatson Fans & Motors Ltd is a rare example of a century old, continuously family run engineering business. From a single lock up in 1928 to a respected national supplier and repair specialist, its history reflects steady growth, strong values, and deep roots in Sheffield’s industrial community.
