Sweden and Norway, recharging along the route using a battery transported by a pickup truck. The first two vessels will be delivered to Boreal in 2027, with the others following in yearly batches between 2028 and 2030. Passengers will see a major improvement in comfort. The vessel's digital “flight” controller uses sensors to read the wave conditions and adjusts the hydrofoils in real time, ensuring a smooth ride even in rough seas, while keeping noise low. Recent tests of have confirmed cabin noise levels of just 64dB – less than in trains, aircraft or conventional ferries – making it the quietest high-speed vessel in operation. “Tourists and commuters in Norway will enjoy better service and more frequent departures – free from seasickness, silent, and without the negative impacts of wake and emissions,” says Candela’s European director, Alexander Sifvert. “We’re thrilled to partner with Boreal, whose ambition and leadership are helping drive the electrification of maritime transport. This initiative shows how forward-thinking operators can accelerate the shift to zeroemission travel at sea, while reducing costs.” The Candela ferries are powered by special permanent magnet motors housed in pods below the water that eliminate the need for a mechanical transmission system. With no need for regular maintenance, the sealed, seawater-cooled motors provide significant cost savings compared to diesel engines. They don’t need any oil or fluid changes, ensuring low-cost operation. The custom-built motors are said to deliver four times the power density of other marine powertrains. They drive counter-rotating propellers, improving efficiency, and reducing noise and maintenance. Locating the motors underwater eliminates the rattling noises sometimes associated with gearboxes and mechanical transmissions. Candela has recently raised €30m in funding – its largest round to date, bringing the total capital raised since it was founded in 2014 to €129m. The money will help to finance a second manufacturing facility to scale up production. Candela has already received more than 65 orders for its vessels from countries including India, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, the Maldives and Fiji. n TRANSPORT n The ferries are propelled by permanent magnet motors housed in underwater pods Follow us on LinkedIn @Drives & Controls Follow us X Drives&C Controls & rives Join us Facebo Drives & C on X @Drivesn Forthe D on ok Controls Controls latest news visit Controls the Driv www.driv ves & Controls we vesncontrols.com
