Drives & Controls Magazine July/August 2026

With electric motors accounting for a significant proportion of industrial electricity consumption, variable speed drives became one of the most effective tools available for reducing energy usage. Jaguar was well positioned to meet this challenge. Throughout its development, the brand increasingly emphasised energy-saving functionality, particularly in pump and fan applications where speed control can dramatically reduce power consumption. IMO’s Jaguar range emerged as a key technology in helping users lower operating costs while reducing overall energy demand. This focus extended beyond industrial applications. Dedicated Jaguar platforms were developed for HVAC and water industries, including the VXH and VXA ranges. These drives incorporated application-specific features such as multiple PID loops, pump cascade control, energy optimisation functions and advanced diagnostics, enabling end users to achieve both operational and environmental objectives. In many ways, Jaguar anticipated the sustainability agenda that has become central to modern manufacturing. Evolution into a Complete Drive Family One of Jaguar’s greatest strengths has been its ability to evolve without losing sight of customer needs. Over the years the product family expanded from compact micro drives to comprehensive ranges covering applications from fractional kilowatt ratings through to high-power industrial systems exceeding 700kW. The introduction of the CUB, VXR and VXG families provided solutions for everything from simple conveyors and pumps to complex materials handling, process control and heavy industrial machinery. The VXG, introduced in 2010, represented a significant step forward in performance, incorporating advanced vector control methods, extensive communications options and high-speed processing capability. Designed for demanding applications such as hoisting, packaging, materials handling and process industries, it demonstrated how far inverter technology had progressed since the analogue drives of the 1980s. Throughout this evolution, Jaguar maintained a reputation for robustness and longevity. Case studies consistently highlighted long service life, extensive diagnostic capabilities and industry-leading warranty support, attributes that helped build strong customer loyalty across multiple sectors. A Legacy that Continues Today, the Jaguar name represents more than a product range. It represents continuity in an industry characterised by constant technological change. Recent industry publications describe Jaguar as a brand with more than four decades of heritage and over five million installations worldwide, reflecting its enduring position within the variable speed drive market. The launch of the latest Jaguar generations demonstrates that the principles established in 1984—innovation, reliability and practical engineering—remain as relevant as ever. As Drives & Controls marks its own 40-year milestone, Jaguar’s journey offers an excellent illustration of how industrial technology has evolved. From analogue speed control and early digital communications to advanced vector control, connectivity and intelligent energy management, the brand has consistently adapted to meet the changing needs of industry. Four decades on, Jaguar remains what it has always sought to be: a drive engineered not simply to control motors, but to help industry move forward.
