Those same characteristics can help to drive logs through mills at 30m/s, allowing them to keep up with the fastest saws. Profile rail with rollers can be configured to handle loads up to 22,680kg, which is more than enough for most woodworking applications, but this comes at the cost of velocity and acceleration. Handling those loads would translate to maximum speeds of no more than 3.05m/s. Concave rollers won’t work on round rail because part of their attraction is their ability to hug the rail. Using balls instead of rollers enables a little more velocity – up to 6.1m/s – which limits load handling to 4,540kg. Using round rails with balls instead of rollers is the least appropriate option for sawmill applications, but works in others, such as woodworking routers. Its dynamic load maxes out at roughly 1,815kg and its velocity at 3.05m/s. Configurations that use chain drives are the most resistant to debris, which is why they are included in all configuration scenarios. They also reduce maintenance costs. As long as the chain remains lubricated, it is unlikely to accumulate grime. Another valuable aspect of tract roller configurations is that, when combined with round rail, it is the most tolerant of misalignment. Although precision and accuracy are not a primary concern when cutting wood, the fact that sawmill managers have to spend less on installation contributes to profitability. For industrial-scale woodworking, where speed, load capacity and debris resistance matter more than ultra-high precision, a linear motion system based on round rail and concave rollers offers the optimal balance of performance, reliability and cost. Choosing the right motion control configuration can boost throughput significantly and enhance profitability in any modern sawmill. n Table 1: Linear motion configurations, ranked roughly according to their potential value for woodworking applications.
