FOOD AND BEVERAGE n Automated testing offers multiple hygiene benefits. For example, Fortress Technology’s Halo automated metaldetecting system reduces the manual handling of test samples. This can be a a messy and time-consuming process, especially on pipeline systems. The pipes must be flushed and cleaned thoroughly, often disrupting production and requiring additional sanitation staff. In addition, improper cleaning between manual tests can lead to cross-contact contamination. Automated testing eliminates these risks, performing precise, mess-free validation without interrupting production or compromising hygiene. Cleanability in practice Huuskes, a Dutch supplier of convenience meals, has built its production lines on hygienic design and advanced inspection principles. Its automated facility contains more than 20 Fortress metal detection systems, including six ultra-hygienic, CIP Stealth metal detectors, which is uses to inspect more than 15,000 meals every day. Each IP69K-protected system allows full washdowns without removing conveyor belts, thus cutting cleaning times, preventing cross-contamination, and supporting Huuskes’ stringent sanitation and HACCP protocols. “Food safety and cleaning efficiency are crucial for our consumer’s needs,” says Huuskes’ convenience manager, Geert Dimmendaal. “Given that we work with meats, vegetables and cooking oils, all our equipment must be easy to clean and disinfect.” Although hygienic design is crucial, equipment should also be practical for routine operation. Processors need to achieve an optimal balance between hygiene and functionality, so that design decisions support serviceability, cleaning effectiveness and production uptime, without introducing undue complexity. This requires operation-wide engagement and ensuring personnel are fully trained in all aspects of sanitation protocols and the latest and most up-to-date SSOPs. Other hygienic and time-saving features that we have implemented at Fortress include eliminating the use of tools on our latest food inspection systems. This allows personnel to lift conveyors off frames quickly and easily to facilitate deeper and faster cleaning. The belt tension and alignment are restored instantly when reassembled after maintenance and cleaning. n Fortress Technology has produced a White Paper The Role of Hygienic Equipment Design in Meat and Poultry Processing. It can be downloaded from https://fortresstechnology.com Hygienic design principles extend to the build of critical inspection equipment to withstand harsh washdown conditions and prevent residue or debris accumulation.
