n TECHNOLOGY ABB ROBOTICS HAS ANNOUNCED a software development that allows its OmniCore-powered robots to recognise and adapt to their surroundings using any third-party camera or sensor, even in complex applications. The hardware-agnostic system will allow the robots to see and adapt in real time with advanced perception skills, using any vision sensor. ABB claims the development could cut programming and commissioning times by up to 90%, compared to custom approaches. Designed for users of all skill levels, the OmniCore EyeMotion software uses a simple Web interface with drag-and-drop representations of sensors or cameras, to provide rapid image acquisition and recognition. It is built into ABB’s software suite, and complements its RobotStudio programming and simulation tool, allowing set-up and deployment to be completed in “hours”. ABB believes the software will transform a wide range of robot tasks, from sorting to quality inspection, in sectors such as automotive, electronics manufacturing, logistics, packaging, and food and beverage. In more complex applications, it can be combined with ABB’s Automatic Path Planning Online tool, which plans and executes optimum, collision-free paths around obstacles and moving objects in real time, without human intervention, increasing autonomy and cutting cycle times by up to half. “Over the past decade, we have evolved AI vision to give robots ‘eyes’ that can see the world in 3D, but previously this required advanced camera hardware,” explains ABB Robotics’ president, Marc Segura. “In one step, OmniCore EyeMotion grants any robot the ability to both see and understand the world around it, for a wide range of 2D and 3D vision-based applications, advancing autonomy and versatility.” ABB suggests that by enhancing robots’ sensing, perception and visual reasoning, the new software is another milestone in the company’s journey towards Autonomous Versatile Robotics (AVR). Next-generation robots will plan and perform diverse, complex tasks autonomously in real time, without human intervention, by uniting vision, precision, speed, dexterity and mobility, through the power of generative AI. www.abb.com/global/en/areas/robotics Robots can work with any vision sensor, slashing commissioning by up to 90% ZZZ HXFKQHU FR XN VDOHV#HXFKQHU FR XN 6PDUW 6DIHW\ IRU ,QWUDORJLVWLFV 3URWHFW SHRSOH UHGXFH GRZQWLPH DQG VLPSOLI\ DFFHVV ZLWK 5),' DFFHVV VPDUW LQWHUORFNV VDIHW\ QHWZRUNV OLJKW FXUWDLQV DQG PRUH 6FDODEOH VDIHW\ EXLOW IRU IDVW PRYLQJ HQYLURQPHQWV ABB’s OmniCore EyeMotion software gives robots the power to see and adapt in real time.
