TECHNOLOGY n 23 www.drivesncontrols.com June 2025 THE US SUBSIDIARY OF THE Chinese motor-maker Wolong has announced a ferrite-assisted synchronous reluctance motor with an integrated drive, designed for high efficiency, robust performance, and long-term reliability in harsh industrial environments. With an efficiency equivalent to IE5, the EMR-Bulldozer motor does not use any rare-earth-based magnetic materials. It is aimed at demanding pump, fan, compressor and conveyor applications. The motor’s innovative rotor design, using ferrite compound permanent magnets, cuts energy losses by 40% and lowers noise levels. With almost no rotor losses, the motor has an “exceptional” power density, often being up to three frame sizes smaller than IE2 motors of a similar rating. It delivers up to twice the output of similarly sized induction motors, making it an efficient, highperformance option for applications such as air and liquid handling, cooling, transfer, and washing systems. Wolong claims that the motors are 3–5% more efficient than traditional induction motors when operating at 25–100% loads in variable-speed applications, resulting in rapid paybacks through energy savings. The motor’s design is said to result in low core, stator and bearing temperatures, extending its lifespan and reducing the need for maintenance. The motors act as easy drop-in replacements in retrofit projects, matching the size of standard induction motors and eliminating the need for mechanical modifications. The integrated drive supports variable-speed loads across a wide speed range, and offers an extended constant power control range above the rated speed. This allows precise speed regulation and accurate low-speed control, making the motors particularly suitable for environments that require strict performance standards and low-noise operation. The motors are available in North America in Nema frames 184T to 286T, in four- or six-pole options, and ratings from 3–50hp (2.2–37.3kW), and speeds of 1,200 or 1,800 rpm. They operate at 480 V and are approved by UL, cUL, and CSA, ensuring compliance with North American safety standards. The TEFC (totally-enclosed, fan-cooled) design and IP55 enclosures ensure dust and water resistance. The motors are rated for use at altitudes up to 1km and in ambient temperatures up to 60°C. The topmounting drive enhances system reliability and longevity, while a near-unity power factor allows the use of smaller, more cost-effective drives by lowering motor currents. The motors incorporate Class F nonhygroscopic and anti-fungus insulation, ensuring durability in demanding conditions. Wolong, founded in 1984, has more than 18,000 employees worldwide. In 2023 it had assets worth $374bn and sales of $518bn. It claims to be one of the world’s top three motor and drive manufacturers. The company has 42 manufacturing sites around the world, and 50 subsidiaries. Its brands include Brook Crompton, ATB, Morley, Schorch, Laurance Scott and Oli. www.wolongamerica.com/pmsynrm Rare-earth-free IE5 integrated motor ‘cuts rotor losses by 40%’ Wolong’s EMR-Bulldozer integrated motor offers up to twice the output of similarly sized induction motors motor control set-ups, boosting productivity and reducing downtime. It offers zero stacking with no derating at up to 55ºC, providing installation flexibility without compromising performance. Removable terminal blocks, available in screw or push-in versions, add convenience and adaptability. The M100 supports direct-on-line (DOL), reversing and safety functions in the same form factor. Embedded functions such as electronic overload protection, phase loss detection, phase imbalance monitoring, and weld detection, contribute to safety. With the growing importance of functional safety, the starter includes SIL3certified models and supports Safe Torque Off. “Our M100 Electronic Motor Starter represents a significant leap forward in motor starting technology and Rockwell’s motor control portfolio,” says Rockwell’s business manager for industrial components, Bill Meindl. “Its advanced features, including point-on-wave switching technology, significantly boosts productivity while minimising valuable panel space, delivering a powerful solution that aligns with the evolving needs of the industry.” www.rockwellautomation.com
