WEG has produced a White Paper exploring advances in motor efficiency and standards. Called Exceeding Boundaries, the document looks at motor efficiency regulations in countries around the world, and compares various motor technologies that can be used to achieve high efficiencies, assessing their strengths and weaknesses. It examines how a hybrid combination of synchronous reluctance and permanent magnet motor technologies can achieve IE6 levels of efficiency. It also provides graphs comparing the efficiencies of IE classifications. https://drivesncontrols.news/5cutklaq Paper examines how automation will shape the future The International Society of Automation (ISA) has published a position paper intended to support the automation profession in a changing world. Called Automation Shapes Global Economic Growth and Development, it examines some of the key areas in which automation will shape the future, such as: supporting supply chain resiliency; achieving energy efficiency and sustainability; advancing cybersecurity resiliency; and enhancing the modern workforce. The paper recommends several courses of action for decision-makers in industry, government and academia seeking to realise the full benefits of automation. www.isa.org/standards-and-publications/ isa-publications/position-white-papers e-Book looks at design challenges of motor control The global distributor Mouser Electronics, has published an e-Book that examines the design challenges of motor control. Called Mastering Motor Control Design, it offers electrical design engineers of all levels of experience practical information on system parameters and product selection to obtain optimal system performance. Topics include selecting the correct type of motor for an application, driver and microcontroller options, motor power components, motor isolation, current sensing and more. It also includes links to motor control products. https://drivesncontrols.news/l52zgt4z Podcasts will discuss developments in STEM industries The technical PR agency, Stone Junction, has launched a series of podcasts covering technologies, advances and challenges facing the industrial sector. Called The Junction Box, the podcasts will also offer insights into PR and marketing in STEM industries. Experts from Stone Junction will explore trends with guest speakers. In the first episode, Riding the Automation Wave, the guest is Nikesh Mistry, Gambica’s sector head of industrial automation. The podcasts will be available on all major platforms. https://drivesncontrols.news/ks3bt4j2 48 n NEW PRODUCTS n DESIGN DATA AND MULTIMEDIA October 2024 www.drivesncontrols.com Trio Motion Technology has updated its DX3 EtherCat servodrive with STO functional safety that meets SIL3 and PLe safety levels. It has also added 480V versions to both the EtherCat model and the DX3 Conventional model that supports pulse-and-direction, analogue, as well as CANopen control. Both models are available in 200V versions with power ratings from 50W to 2kW, and the new 480V version with a power range from 1–7.5kW. Update rates for the EtherCat model are down to 125μs. www.triomotion.com Aerotech has released a hexapod for precision positioning and motion tasks down to the nanometre range. The robust HEX150-125HL is smaller than its predecessor, and has undergone design improvements leading to significant increases in performance. It also costs 30% less. The parallel kinematic hexapod can position workpieces with high dynamics and precision. It is suitable for automation applications, and for measuring and testing in quality assurance. www.aerotech.com/ 3d-metrology-hexapods Apex Dynamics has added couplings to its portfolio of more than 50 gearboxes and rack-andpinion systems. They provide zero-backlash shaft-to-shaft connections and offer a choice of inputs and outputs. The couplings have high torsional rigidity, making them suitable for high-torque and high-speed applications. There is a choice between disc and elastomer variants. The precision solid-disc couplings have a laminate disc that allows for flex if there are misalignments between mating devices. They are suitable for encoder and directdrive applications. The low-inertia elastomer couplings offer a less expensive alternative that allows for dampening and flex. The zerobacklash couplings have more torsional play to absorb vibrations. Variants include servo/stepper motor, spindle drive, input and output sleeve types. The couplings offer easy axial installation and are bored to order. Apex can supply couplings machined to the correct specifications, with a guaranteed 2-3 week delivery. All come with five-year warranties. The increased payload can be achieved “in minutes”simply by updating the machines’PolyScope software to version 5.19 or later. The updates raise the total payload, including end-effector, from 20kg to 25kg for the UR20, and from 30kg to 35 kg for the UR30, when using the cobots in their top lift position. UR says this will be especially useful for palletising applications. UR20s and UR30s shipped from this year will automatically include the software supporting the use of higher payloads.
