n TECHNOLOGY A NORWEGIAN MOTOR MANUFACTURER claims to have produced the world’s thinnest and lightest precision torque motors using a patented technology that results in ironless and slotless motor windings with 60% copper fill factors. Alva Industries’ FiberPrinting technology supports continuous winding of stator mats for ironless and slotless, rotary and linear motors. It maximises fill factors and allows stator sizes and configurations to be customised, resulting in optimal combinations of torque density and precision in any size or form factor. The stator mats can be produced in any length, width, thickness or pole size. Alva says that the flexibility of the process also allows it to develop custom windings faster than other methods. Ironless and slotless motors have traditionally been associated with poor power and torque density performance because of their low copper fill factors, which compromise phase resistance and voltage constants. Alva claims that its technology overcomes this limitation, enabling fill factors of up to 60%, as well as short end-windings. These boost the performance of the slotless motors, allowing them to challenge slotted motors. Another limitation of conventional ironless and slotless motors is that their winding techniques result in skewed windings which generate a magnetic field that is misaligned with the rotor's magnetic field, resulting in a low motor constant (Km). Alva’s technology can produce non-skewed stator windings with magnetic fields that are aligned with the rotor's magnetic field, improving performance “massively” in terms of power and torque density. Because of their non-skewed windings, Alva’s ultra-thin SlimTorq torque motors offer low levels of noise and vibration, reliable brushless operation and high torque outputs. They are available in outer diameters from 39–130mm. “We hear all the time from engineers developing systems for high-precision applications that they need to reduce size and weight, while improving overall performance,” says Alva’s chief commercial officer, Nicolas Giraudo. “With SlimTorq this is now possible, as it is the thinnest and lightest precision torque motor available on the market.” www.alvaindustries.com/product/ slimtorq-motors Novel technology produces the ‘thinnest and lightest’ torque motors Alva’s SlimTorq motors can deliver peak torque levels of up to 21Nm
