Matching the right combination of drive and motor for an application is not always straightforward, but getting this decision right from the outset can reward you with enhanced energy efficiency and reliability. ABB’s matched IE5 SynRM packages are optimised for a range of specific applications, and are designed to work in perfect harmony. Picking the right motor for an application starts with choosing the correct size. An oversized motor will consume excess energy, while also delivering only a fraction of what it’s capable of. An undersized motor on the other hand will often have to work too hard, and will generate too much heat as a result. Once you’ve specified the optimum size, it’s then time to think about efficiency classes. Over the past decade, electric motor technology has advanced extremely rapidly. In 2019 ABB’s IE5 SynRM became the first commercially available motor to achieve IE5. More recently, ABB has also launched a range of motors meeting the anticipated IE6 efficiency level in magnet-free SynRM designs. SynRM and VSD packages are an excellent solution for motor retrofits. An IE5 SynRM for instance is the same size as an IE2 induction motor, and so because the main outer dimensions and output power remain the same, there’s no need for mechanical modifications. A SynRM motor cannot run without a drive, and this brings into play the idea of packages. ABB is one of a very small number of manufacturers globally that offers both motors and drives, and as such can provide matched packages that are optimised to achieve utmost efficiency across both devices. ABB motor and drive packages are available for general purpose applications, as well as IE5 packages for water & wastewater and HVAC among others. Matched packages are also available for operation in explosive atmospheres, along with packages for use with liquid-cooled motors. The savings here can be even higher still – for instance, many liquid-cooled induction motors only reach IE1 even when optimised for drive operation. IE5 motors have ~40 percent lower energy losses than IE3 motors, and are particularly effective when used at partial loads. For a 110 kW 1500 rpm drive system in pump/fan duty, with an IE3 induction motor, the package efficiency is 92.5 percent, while for an IE5 SynRM motor the package efficiency is 94.2 percent. Using the same manufacturer for both motor and drive means no compatibility issues or problems with cabling, and the suitability for both drive and motor can be checked prior to purchase to ensure that they are the best match for the application. This also saves time spent cross-checking data sheets between two different manufacturers. Choosing the wrong drive for an application can create lead to faults and failures once in operation, and even cause damage to other system equipment. As well as benefiting from IE5 efficiency levels, choosing a matched package from the same manufacturer ensures that both motor and drive will guarantee the best possible performance.
