TECHNOLOGY n WEG HAS ANNOUNCED an electric motor that combines two technologies – permanent magnet (PM) and synchronous reluctance (SynRM) – to make it “the most efficient industrial motor ever created”. The W23 Sync+ Ultra delivers IE6 levels of efficiency and achieves this “unparalleled” efficiency across varying speed and load conditions. Thee new motor is based on W23 Sync+ family of IE5 motors that WEG launched at the SPS exhibition in Germany last November. The IE6 efficiency rating means that the new machine is 20% more efficient than the IE5 models. The PM/SynRM technology cuts electrical losses through the strategic use of magnets. Compared to conventional induction motors, the new motor exhibits low efficiency variations – when load and speed are reduced by 25%, the efficiency drops by less than 2%. The compact motor has been designed to exceed the current European Ecodesign regulations. It is compatible with existing installations and is suitable for applications such as compressors, pumps, fans and conveyors. The motor will be available worldwide in IEC frame sizes 80–450 (and Nema frames 140–7000), spanning outputs from 0.75– 1,250kW, and for 220/380V, 230/400V, 240/415V and 400/690V power supplies. It can operate over a wide speed range at constant torque, without needing forced ventilation, and will be available in speed ranges from 750–6,000 rpm. “The W23 Sync+ Ultra IE6 efficiency motor represents a significant milestone in motor technology,” says Marek Lukaszczyk, WEG’s marketing manager for Europe and the Middle East. “An IE6 motor has another 20% reduction of losses compared to an IE5 motor.
