It was around the mid-1970’s when a new ‘Market Forecasting, Trends and Statistics Working Party’ was set up to look at other statistical projects including: longer-term market forecasting, length of credit surveys and quarterly invoiced sales and orders surveys. The working party was the forerunner of today’s BFPA Market Forecasting and Statistics Committee, which continues to meet several times a year to guide the various surveys which the association now carries out. 1986 saw pneumatic companies join the BFPA, and within two years, monthly, quarterly and annual pneumatic surveys had all been established. Not long later, in 1988, the BFPDA was formed and by 1991 surveys had been added to cover fluid power distributors too, all which provide the basis of the current wide range of surveys undertaken by BFPA for hydraulic, pneumatics and distribution. Despite a difficult year due to the Covid- 19 pandemic, all the BFPA surveys were completed in 2020 and results circulated as normal, with a few postponed to the autumn. The first BFPA Economic Forecast event, instigated by the BFPA Market Forecasting, Trends and Statistics Working Party was held in 1992, where John Walker of Oxford Economic Forecasting presented the first forecasts for hydraulics and pneumatics. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic we were not able to hold a face- to-face event in 2020 to follow the excellent seminar hosted by Niftylift in 2019; instead, the 2020 event was a virtual online seminar but nevertheless a success and well attended by members. As usual, the main focus was the latest five-year fluid power industry forecast (for 2020-2024) and global economic update from Oxford Economics. Given the event was held during both the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the final few months of the Brexit Transition period, there much to discuss during a lively interactive Q&A session. The BFPA in-house survey programme also enables the association to participate in the exchange of top-level information with CETOP and other international fluid power associations – yet another benefit to members of participating in the surveys. In summary, the statistics service continues to be a key BFPA member benefit and every company, no matter how large or small, is encouraged to make the most of its membership by getting involved.  Niftylift factory tour.  Niftylift, Milton Keynes. 38 www.bfpa.co.uk
