The acquisition is intended to make these services more accessible to independent garages, offering another option when faced with replacing expensive electronic components. Remanufacturing enters the EV era And if remanufacturing is already helping garages deal with sophisticated electronics, the next challenge is applying that expertise to electric vehicles. There were some interesting examples at Automechanika Frankfurt in September, where two remanufacturing developments picked up awards. BORG Automotive won the Innovation Award in the Sustainable Drive Solutions category for its remanufactured eDrive Motor. The company has developed a process incorporating inspection, diagnostics and functional testing, which has already been successfully prototyped for motors from two vehicle manufacturers. Although still at the prototype stage, the development could eventually offer the independent aftermarket an alternative to new OE electric drive motors or second-hand units. Another winner was UK-based Autocraft Solutions Group, whose REVIVE EV battery remanufacturing workshops received the event’s Green Award. Unlike BORG’s prototype, Autocraft’s battery remanufacturing operation is already established. The company currently repairs between 300 and 400 battery packs each month for OE manufacturer customers at its facilities in Grantham and Arnhem, Netherlands. Rather than replacing complete battery packs, Autocraft identifies faults at cell or module level and replaces the affected components. The company says most failures are localised and that packs can be restored to more than 90% of their original performance. With demand expected to grow as the EV parc ages, Autocraft is now looking to expand its operations into Germany, Spain and Italy. From hard-to-find starter motors for 40-year-old cars to remanufactured electric motors and battery packs, there’s plenty happening in the sector. And as the range of available solutions grows, garages could find themselves with more options for keeping customers’ vehicles on the road without automatically turning to expensive new components.
