News 6 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Melett has officially become part of the global Tier 1 automotive supplier BMTS Technology. BMTS said the acquisition of Melett will support its next phase of growth to become a leading supplier of turbochargers to the OE and aftermarket repair sectors. BMTS specialises in high-technology components for existing and future powertrains, including turbochargers. With manufacturing and development operations across Europe, Asia and the Americas, the company serves passenger cars, commercial vehicles and off-highway applications. Melett is renowned for its premium-quality aftermarket turbochargers, core assemblies and components that are made to meet or exceed OEM standards. The company supplies businesses ranging from small turbo repair workshops through to large volume remanufacturing facilities. Chris Wallhead, Melett general manager, said: “This move provides us with a secure foundation to further our operational efforts and product portfolio, strengthening the Melett brand while continuing partnerships with our longstanding customers.” The Melett team remains in place and will continue to operate from its offices in the UK, Poland and North America. Van market dip ‘highlights ZHDN EXVLQHVV FRQᎮGHQFHૼ New light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations fell by nearly 8% in the first month of this year, marking the weakest start to a year since 2012, according to latest figures published y the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The SMMT said the figures reflects a tough economic environment, with weak business confidence constraining fleet investment, with the decline driven by a 57% slump in demand for new pickups to 1,206 units. The move follows government fiscal changes to treat double cabs as cars for benefit in kind and capital allowance purposes, which the industry warned would heap additional costs onto buyers, SMMT said. Demand for medium vans also fell, by 27% to 2,547 units, while the lower volume small van segment contracted by 40% to 402 units. Only large vans and 4x4s posted growth, up 10% to 12,696 units and 34% to 711 respectively. Headline growth in electric van registrations was also positive, with uptake rising 26%. But, with a market share of 10.4%, demand would have to more than double to meet the mandated target of 24% in 2026. Delivering such growth in a weak overall market, and despite more than half of all models now available as EVs, with unprecedented discounts on their sale, poses an immense challenge, SMMT said. Meanwhile, the latest industry outlook for 2026 has been revised downwards, with 321,000 units expected to be delivered this year – still a 2% increase on 2025, but a significant softening from the 335,000 anticipated in the previous October outlook. Similarly, while the latest BEV outlook expects more than 50% growth this year, the market share has been revised down to 13%, from the 14% share expected in the last outlook. Mike Hawes, SMMT CEO, said rising EV uptake is encouraging but coming at huge cost to industry amid market contraction. “With an even steeper 2026 target that is further still from real-world demand, government’s review of the transition must come urgently, recognising additional action is needed to deliver on ambition.” BMTS Technology acquires Melett

News 7 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 The Genuine Parts Company (GPC) is to split the business into two independent, publicly traded firms, one comprising its Automotive Parts Group (Global Automotive) and the other comprising its Industrial Parts Group (Global Industrial). GPC said the deal is targeted for completion in the first quarter of 2027. Global Automotive is the largest global network of automotive parts and auto care repair centres operating in the UK, Europe, North America and Australasia. Going to market under the globally recognised NAPA brand, amongst others, Global Automotive will be a more focused automotive aftermarket platform, GPC said. Will Stengel, chair-elect and CEO, said: GPC has a proud history of evolving with our markets for nearly a century. “Creating two focused, independent companies sharpens customer and market alignment, increases clarity and speed, simplifies operations and enables disciplined, business-specific investments to unlock long-term value.” Halfords apprenticeships call as new academy launched The number of young people starting motoring apprenticeships has fallen 14% in three years, according to latest industry analysis released by Halfords in February. However, Halfords said its analysis of apprenticeship data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the number of young people (aged 16+) starting apprenticeships overall increased by 4% year on year. The ONS data, published in November 2025, showed that in 2024/2025 3,200 young people aged 16+ started motor vehicle apprenticeships in the UK, down from 3,730 three years earlier. Halfords has recently highlighted the importance of equipping young people with real-world, transferable skills, particularly in areas like engineering, mechanics, and digital technology. The company has also called for a review of vocational course content as part of the AI Skills Framework launched last October 2025, and is urging the government to put practical training and vocational education at the heart of its AI and skills strategy. With UK industries such as vehicle repair, engineering and construction facing skills shortages, the vast majority of parents (74%) say they find such practical careers appealing for their children. Halfords CEO Henry Birch said: “We’re calling on government and industry to work together to make hands-on careers more accessible, more visible, and more valued and reverse the decline in motoring apprentices before it begins to affect Britain’s ability to keep moving. “We’re also pleased to be announcing the opening of our training academy for our future apprentices as we look to expand our apprenticeship intake and tackle the growing need for more hands-on automotive skills.” The academy in Hertfordshire aims to recruit up to 250 new autocentre apprentices over the next year. UK auto parts giant to hone aftermarket focus IAAF sets stage for awards event Nominations have opened for this year’s Automechanika Birmingham Garage Awards, the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation has announced. News 9 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 GSF steers veteran brand back to UK garages GSF Car Parts has kicked off its 2026 expansion programme by opening a new branch in Wokingham. The new, Millars Business Park site, is strategically placed to serve independent garages and strengthen GSF’s position in the local market, the motor factor said. Wokingham joins several other GSF branches in the region, including Reading and Basingstoke. A total of 12 full-time employees will work from the latest 5,440 ft2 branch, and six brand new vans will operate from the site. Wokingham will include office space, a retail area, and a warehouse. Danny Spencer, Wokingham branch manager, said: “I have been with GSF for eight months after 22 years in the industry, and ever since day one, GSF has been a breath of fresh air. “We have a fantastic team assembled here in Wokingham, with many decades of experience between us from my assistant branch manager, Amber Barnes, to our drivers who are all fired up for this new chapter.” Factor adds Wokingham to branches network GSF Car Parts is to be the major UK aftermarket supplier of the FRAM filtration range, under a deal that will also mark the return of the brand to the sector with the motor factor, which successfully sold the brand previously. FRAM, manufactured by PURFLUX GROUP, draws on 70 years of OE and aftermarket expertise to deliver OE-quality filtration. GSF will roll out FRAM filtration products across its network, delivering a comprehensive range with 90% coverage for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The OE quality range includes fuel, carbon and pollen cabin, air and oil filters designed to offer premium performance. The partnership forms part of GSF’s continued investment in both its product catalogue and national footprint. With a further 20 branches planned for 2026, the business is set to expand its network to more than 220 sites nationwide. Founded in the US in 1932 and established in Treforest in 1937, FRAM has long been part of the British motor trade. GSF’s CEO Steve Horne said: “This partnership is about bringing an exceptional filtration range back to garages. Workshops want quality they can trust, availability they can rely on and pricing that makes sense. FRAM delivers on all three.” Julien Grange, CEO of PURFLUX, said: “Working with GSF gives us a unique opportunity to re-establish the brand at scale, supported by a strong national network.” In addition to product coverage, FRAM will support workshops with technical training, fitting guidance, an online catalogue and a dedicated mobile app. Wokingham ribbon-cutting ceremony

News 10 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 BookMyGarage in £134m retail work boost for workshops Independent garages and franchise garages benefitted from a record £134 million of retail work booked via the BookMyGarage platform in 2025, the MOTs, servicing and repairs comparison website has revealed. The site said it boosted bookings for its sector partners by 39% last year compared to 2024, with 88% for independent garages and 12% for its franchise partners. More than half (57%) of its independent garage partners signed up to Accelerate, its premium package designed to drive measurable growth through digital marketing, customer acquisition, and operational support. The average review score for Accelerate partners is 4.72/5, demonstrating that excellent customer service and quality workmanship sit hand-inhand with more bookings and ultimately, increased profitability, BookMyGarage said. Central to Accelerate’s proposition is its risk-free promise with a revenue return guarantee of £3 back for every £1 investment in the first 12-months of using the platform. Meanwhile, bookings from BookMyGarage had a significant impact on business for almost four-fifths (79%) of garages, according to the company’s latest survey, conducted last November, based on 111 responses from 2,354 BookMyGarage partners. Almost a fifth (17%) said bookings from the site were vital for their business. Garage partner respondents also ranked BookMyGarage as ‘great’ in the NPS score showing strong satisfaction in the network. BookMyGarage chief marketing officer Jessica Ruddick said: “We are delighted that 2025 was the most profitable year to date for our independent and franchise garage partners. BookMyGarage gives drivers the choice and convenience they want while helping garages connect with customers they might otherwise struggle to reach. “The 39% year on year increase in our booking volumes demonstrates the growing confidence drivers have in using our platform. Our insights show that while price matters, convenience and trust – including proximity to home, availability and strong customer reviews – are the real drivers behind booking decisions.” ELTA Automotive has announced the acquisition of Tamworth-based Cooling Components and its Serck Automotive brand. ELTA said on January 28 the acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, marked a further milestone in the firm’s growth and reinforced its commitment to investing in strong, specialist businesses serving the independent automotive aftermarket. Cooling Components, a neighbouring business to ELTA, will continue to operate from its Tamworth warehouse, with all day-today operations unchanged. Cooling and thermal management are increasingly strategic categories for the automotive aftermarket, ELTA said. As vehicles become more complex, effective temperature control is critical to performance, reliability, and emissions compliance. As part of the acquisition, Paul Baggot will remain as director of Cooling Components. Baggot said: “This acquisition marks a key moment in the next phase of the Serck Automotive brand. Cooling Components has built a built a strong respected business, but to take Serck Automotive to the next level required significant new investment and additional resources.” ELTA managing director Ian Hallam said cooling and thermal management are vital growth areas for the aftermarket as vehicle technology continues to evolve. ELTA Automotive acquires Cooling Components

Spotlight 11 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Green light for SERMI ‘vital’ for independents After months of waiting, the European scheme will officially go live in the UK on April 1. In this special three-page feature, Aftermarket focuses on next steps forward and industry reaction The Independent Garage Association announced the launch date after confirming it had secured full approval for the European SERMI scheme nationwide. Launching the scheme follows 17 years of persistent effort, advocacy, and collaboration, the IGA said. The move will mean independent garages can finally access secure, securityrelated vehicle repair and maintenance information through the SERMI framework, unlocking opportunities that were previously difficult to reach. The UK is the only country outside the European Union to achieve both approval and implementation of SERMI, which provides a trusted, secure, and manufacturer-recognised route for independent garages to access data that is essential for working on modern vehicles, including systems relating to security, immobilisation, and advanced electronics. The IGA told Aftermarket will continue to support garages through onboarding and is advancing further initiatives focused on secure gateway access and cyber security, ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of servicing and repairing next-generation vehicles. Meanwhile, the IGA said there has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the scheme from vehicle manufacturers, with 19 brands committing to the SERMI scheme within days of being notified of approval. Further manufacturers are expected to follow. The strong early uptake demonstrates the industry’s recognition of SERMI as a vital step forward for the independent sector, providing a secure and standardised route for independent garages to access vehicle securityrelated information, the IGA said. Manufacturers already committed to SERMI include Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar, Jeep, Lancia, Land Rover, Maserati, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, Toyota and Vauxhall. Stuart James, IGA chief executive, said: “From April 1, eligible repairers can operate within a trusted, recognised framework that puts independent garages back on a level playing field.” “To have 19 manufacturers on board within days of notifying them of UK approval shows just how important SERMI is to the future of our sector. This scheme will positively change the operational capability of independent garages and provide something we simply haven’t had in the UK before.” While SERMI will not be relevant to every independent garage business, the IGA is keen to ensure that garages are fully informed and able to make the right decision for their own operations. James said: “It’s essential that garages are secure in their own minds about whether SERMI is something they need. Our role is to continue providing clear and accurate information so businesses can make an informed choice that’s right for them.” Meanwhile, garages are being reminded that the SERMI set-up process includes government DBS checks, which can take up to two weeks, and in some cases longer. Garages are encouraged to factor this into their planning. The IGA said it will continue to communicate regularly with members and the wider independent sector to educate and inform businesses as SERMI adoption moves forward. Eligible repairers ‘can operate within a trusted, recognised framework that puts independent garages back on a level playing field’

Spotlight 12 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Autotech Connect chief technology officer Laurence Abbott says the scheme is an important step forward for independent garages, but access to data is only part of the picture. “Garages also need the right cyber safeguards, processes and technician capability in place,” Abbott said. “The businesses that take a joined-up approach now will be in a stronger position as vehicle security systems continue to evolve.” For workshops, this marks a turning point. Functions such as key programming, immobiliser resets, secure ECU replacement and other security-critical operations are increasingly being protected by formal access controls. For independent garages, SERMI offers a route to continue carrying out this work — but only if they meet the required standards. For many businesses, that represents both a significant opportunity and a new set of responsibilities. Motor factor chief Kevan Wooden has welcomed approval for the launch of SERMI in the UK as a hugely significant moment for the independent aftermarket. The chief executive of LKQ & Ireland praised work by the IGA. However, IAAF chief executive Mark Field said while the association welcomed the move, it continued to have reservations about the impact of the scheme being voluntary in the UK, risking confusion among garages. Wooden said: “SERMI is a proven framework that already operates successfully across Europe and Northern Ireland. Its approval in Great Britain brings much-needed clarity and creates a clear pathway for manufacturers and the aftermarket to align around a single, trusted standard for accessing security-related repair and maintenance information. “Independent garages play a vital role in keeping motorists moving, and fair, secure access to vehicle data is essential if they are to remain competitive and keep more work in-house. Widespread adoption of SERMI by vehicle manufacturers is therefore critical.” Wooden said mandating the scheme would be the logical next step to ensure consistency, reduce uncertainty, and create a genuinely level playing field across the UK. Field said: “If a garage is currently not involved heavily in anti-theft related repair activities such as coding keys and repairing door locks, there is little reason to justify signing up.” He noted that workshops do not need to be part of an industry association to be SERMI accredited. This is because the relevant conformity assessment body (CAB) — in the UK’s case RMI Standards and Certification — is also responsible for investigating claims of misuse of the scheme and must remain impartial. Field said the voluntary approach fundamentally impacts the business case for both other CABs applying to be accredited to provide independent repairers with a choice for their accreditation, as well as for access to security related information such as anti-theft related repair work. This is why the IAAF is calling for the scheme to be mandated, as it is in the EU. Industry looks to impact on garages ahead of SERMI Is the aftermarket ready? Kevan Wooden

Spotlight 13 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Repairers ‘should decide on need to register’ O Technicians using manufacturer diagnostic tools must authenticate each security-related job through the SERMI app. O Users working with an RSS will need to enter the details on the SERMI wallet app. Following this, the QR code will be sent to the RSS, which will unlock the security section of the VM tool and enable the work to be undertaken by the RSS. O If a repairer is working with a RSS such as Repairify, both parties will need to be registered with SERMI. O Repairers in need of access to security related RMI data, such as VM manuals, will need to be registered. The same goes for users needing to programme a key or an immobiliser. O For a mobile provider to be SERMI approved, they will need to prove they are a legitimate business. Sole traders will also be able to join the scheme subject to certain criteria. O For a limited company to get approval, they can provide their Companies House registration number or relevant articles of their organisation. O Mobile providers need to show their technicians have two years’ experience O Does the site need SERMI if their mobile operator is SERMI approved? This depends on who is doing the work that requires access to security related information. Phil Peace, managing director of Repairify, said the firm has seen at firsthand how SERMI has been implemented across the EU. First rolled out in Sweden in October 2023, SERMI was implemented after the EU parliament introduced legislation requiring vehicle manufacturers (VMs) to provide unrestricted and standardised access to repair and maintenance information (RMI) to repairers and remote service suppliers (RSS). As a result, access to security related RMI, which also includes diagnostic tools, may be subject to specific security standards and certificates. Peace said: “Some VMs are interpreting the scope of SERMI more broadly than others, particularly around which components are deemed security related. In some cases, this includes ECUs and even modules such as headlamps, where functionality is linked to vehicle access or immobilisation systems.” “That means repairs which were not traditionally considered security related may fall under SERMI in future, but this could vary by manufacturer.” Repairers should evaluate whether SERMI registration is necessary for their business. Bodyshops, in particular, may find that everyday repairs increasingly involve components classified by manufacturers as security sensitive, making registration essential. “It is also important to be clear that SERMI does not create a legal obligation on VMs to comply in the UK. “We would advise the industry to view SERMI as a strategic asset. It places security-sensitive repairs firmly on the agenda, ensures they are carried out by vetted professionals who meet defined standards, and helps to create a more level playing field between authorised and independent repairers." To register in the UK, click here. https://sermi.co.uk/ sermi-application/ Access to security-related vehicle data brings with it real risk. Modern vehicles are software-driven and connected, and every secure login represents a potential point of vulnerability. For independent garages, this puts cyber security firmly on the operational agenda. Vehicle data has commercial and criminal value, and workshops with weak IT or network controls can become targets. A compromised system could expose customer data, enable key cloning or create wider security risks. If something goes wrong, responsibility is likely to rest with the garage. Insurance policies may not cover cyber incidents if reasonable safeguards cannot be demonstrated, and the reputational damage from a breach could be severe for a business built on trust and local relationships. As SERMI access becomes more widely available, cyber security is no longer optional. Secure networks, controlled user access, strong authentication and basic cyber awareness among staff are essential for any workshop carrying out security-related work. Accreditation alone does not make a garage capable of carrying out security-critical repairs. These jobs demand advanced diagnostics, software competence and confidence working within manufacturer platforms. The question facing the UK aftermarket is no longer whether SERMI will affect independent workshops. It is whether individual garages are ready to meet the technical, digital and security standards it brings. Phil Pearce

Business 14 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Partnership aims to build high performance workforce New initiative looks to help garages find, hire and retain the right team members for the long term With the automotive aftermarket facing an escalating skills crisis, Servicesure has announced a new strategic partnership to help members secure skilled staff faster and more effectively. The Institute of the Motor Industry warns the sector will need over 160,000 new skilled workers by 2031, with technician shortages already restricting workshop capacity and growth. To tackle this head on, Servicesure has partnered with Swipe Right Recruitment and Motiva Recruitment Group, giving members clear, practical access to both permanent recruitment and temporary staffing solutions, all through a joined-up approach. Under the partnership, permanent recruitment, delivered exclusively by Swipe Right Recruitment, will help garages find, hire, and retain the right people for the long term. Furthermore, temporary staffing, provided exclusively by Motiva Recruitment Group, will provide rapid access to experienced technicians and MOT testers to keep workshops moving during short-term gaps. Building on these benefits, members of Servicesure, which is GSF Car Parts’ national garage programme, will be able to use an exclusive and innovative job board that launches in the second quarter of the year, with early access for members. Swipe Right Recruitment was founded and is run by professionals with hands-on experience across workshops and service departments. Stan Watson, managing director of Swipe Right Recruitment, said: “Getting the right people isn’t optional, it makes all the difference in making the business a success. We’re here to take the heavy lifting off workshop owners.” Motiva Recruitment Group gives members fast access to experienced, pre-vetted technicians and MOT testers when short-term cover is required. This ensures garages can maintain workflow and customer service during periods of peak demand or unexpected staffing gaps. David Stow, managing director of Motiva Recruitment Group said: “Temporary cover shouldn’t be a lastminute scramble. Servicesure members now have fast, reliable access to skilled technicians exactly when they need them.” Servicesure’s Adam O’Neill said the partnership is now available to Servicesure members and forms part of the network’s commitment to supporting garages with practical, industry-specific solutions that help them operate efficiently and grow sustainably. Visit servicesure.co.uk for details of the partnership.

Business 15 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Drawing on the power of your personal brand Bestselling small business author Dee Blick shares marketing wisdom from her new book Your personal brand is what you stand for; your values, authenticity and how you treat those around you. It’s important that your personal brand aligns with your business brand. When a customer meets you and then encounters your business, they should experience a seamless connection; smiles and ‘aha!’ moments, not confusion. It’s tempting, as a time pressed technician, to think that personal branding is not relevant to you when it absolutely is! With customers increasingly looking for compelling reasons to choose a workshop and once on board, to stay with them, your personal brand elevates you as the ultimate business ambassador. Being authentic is the ace up your sleeve. Here is some insight from my new bestselling book, You’re the Best! How to build an authentic and magnetic personal brand. Being authentic should not challenge you. It starts on territory you’re already familiar with, namely understanding your values and living them. Your values are the moral compass that guide you when times are tough. They reflect how you treat the people around you, regardless of their status, and how you structure your business to be ethical and fair. Being authentic is about being real, not hiding behind smoke and mirrors, so that that every person that connects with you — customers, prospects, colleagues, suppliers, and partners — trusts you because you’re genuine and transparent. Technical 16 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Despite the rise in the number of electric vehicles, turbocharged internal combustion engines remain dominant in the service and repair sector. In fact, industry forecasts project a 10% plus growth in the turbocharger market by 2030, with the independent aftermarket expected to account for more than 50% of the replacements, within a decade. Driving the growing demand are stricter emissions regulations, the prevalence of downsized engines and the increasing complexity of turbocharging technologies. In this vibrant market, Nissens Automotive has positioned itself as a leading provider of premium aftermarket turbochargers. Over the past seven years, Nissens has refined its turbo programme through rigorous research and development, field testing and strategic commercial planning. For workshops and the technicians undertaking turbocharger replacement, technical support and ease of installation are key considerations, as these factors provide them with extra confidence and help them to carry out a full and thorough repair. In recognition of the critical role of technical support for successful installation and maintenance, the company provides a comprehensive range of technical support services, including a dedicated turbo hotline, e-learning modules, live learning sessions, and technical marketing materials. These resources are designed to equip professional technicians with the knowledge and confidence necessary for proficient turbo installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. In addition, the firm’s ‘First Fit’ concept ensures that all essential installation parts, such as gaskets, stretch bolts, and a syringe enabling the pre-lubrication of the turbo shaft, are included in the box. To ensure the proper installation and long-term operation of this advanced component, Nissens offers a complementary solution — the Turbo Oil Feed Pipe (OFP), which plays a huge role in the turbo system’s health and longevity. The OFP is a thin yet vital channel that connects the engine’s lubrication system to the turbocharger. Its job is to deliver clean engine oil directly to the turbo’s bearing system, ensuring proper lubrication and cooling of the turbo shaft. Without this, even the most advanced turbo can fail prematurely. Impaired lubrication is one of the leading causes of turbo breakdowns, often resulting in costly repairs, so Nissens recommends replacing the OFP whenever a new turbo is installed. OFP replacement is key because: O Temperatures in and around engine have increased a lot in recent years because of lean combustion and higher demand for power and lower exhaust emissions, to conform with EU legislation; O The OFP is more exposed to these high temperatures, leading to excessively hot oil and carbon buildup, which restrict the oil flow and kills the turbo; O Start and stop systems on newer cars can also add to the problem as the turbo can suffer from a lack of continuous lubrication. All Nissens turbos are new units, manufactured from quality materials, which eliminates the need to return the old unit or pay the surcharge, a requirement that is typical with many remanufactured components. Nissens invests significantly in R&D, meticulous testing and thorough field examinations. Turbos designed for engines that operate under extreme combustion temperatures, due to stringent emissions requirements and lean combustion for enhanced fuel economy, utilise advanced, heatresistant alloys such as D5S and 1.4848. Additionally, some truck turbo models feature highly durable titanium compressor wheels, while high-end engine turbos are equipped with advanced electronic actuators. Technical 18 www.aftermarketonline.net MARCH 2026 Hybrid vehicles are often seen as a smart compromise for the modern driver. They promise lower emissions, improved fuel efficiency and quieter running — especially in urban environments. For many buyers, they feel like a sensible step towards electrification without giving up the familiarity of a petrol engine. However, while hybrid technology brings clear advantages, it also introduces some less obvious challenges, especially when it comes to exhaust systems, says Klarius sales director James Ellison. In fact, garages and aftermarket manufacturers are increasingly seeing exhaust-related issues on hybrids appearing much earlier than many owners expect. The key factor in these early exhaust issues isn’t exactly an issue with the hybrid technology itself, but rather its application. In most hybrid set-ups, the vehicle is designed to use the electric motor at low speeds and then activate the petrol engine when more power is needed — such as when accelerating heavily or moving at higher speeds. One of the consequences of this is that in stop-start traffic and low-speed urban driving, hybrid engines frequently cycle off and on over the course of a journey. As a result, the exhaust system rarely reaches full operating temperature, and even if it does, it rarely maintains it for very long. That lack of sustained heat can have unexpected consequences. Exhaust systems rely on reaching high temperatures to evaporate the moisture that inevitably builds up inside them. When they stay cooler for longer, condensation builds up inside pipes, silencers and catalytic converters. Over time, that moisture settles in the lowest points of the system, where it can sit and begin to slowly corrode the metal from the inside out. This corrosion isn’t always obvious at first. Many drivers only discover the problem during a routine service or MOT. The types of failures seen on hybrid exhausts are not new. They are mostly variations on the same issues engineers have dealt with for decades. What has changed is the frequency at which they occur. Corrosion remains the most common culprit, but hybrids also place greater stress on flexible joints, welds and connection points. Frequent hot-cold cycling causes materials to expand and contract more often, leading to fatigue over time. Catalytic converters are also more vulnerable in hybrid applications. These components perform best when they operate at consistently high temperatures. In a hybrid, repeated heating and cooling cycles put additional strain on the internal ceramic substrate, increasing the risk of cracking or breakdown. The price of just the replacement part typically coming in at hundreds of pounds and potentially stretching to over £1,000 for premium models. Once you add on labour and other costs, owners can be left with an unpleasant bill. This issue is compounded further by the fact that availability of OE parts is not always guaranteed. At Klarius, replacement exhaust components are developed ahead of demand. Just as importantly, the aftermarket can offer cost-effective repair options. In many cases, a full catalytic converter replacement isn’t necessary. Targeted repairs, such as flex sections or associated pipework, can restore function and compliance without replacing the entire assembly. There’s still a perception that aftermarket parts are a step down from OE. In reality, quality comes down to engineering, materials and testing rather than branding alone. Despite worries over the impact electrification might have on the garage industry, it’s becoming increasingly clear that hybrid vehicles — sales of which are currently outpacing conventional electric vehicles in the UK — will require just as much or even greater support in terms of exhaust components. With the right parts, the right expertise and a trusted aftermarket partner, hybrid exhaust issues don’t have to mean unexpected downtime or excessive cost. Why hybrid exhausts fail — and how the aftermarket can help
