Oils, lubes and additives 38 www.aftermarketonline.net FEBRUARY 2026 Motul puts sustainability at core of lubricants business Two years ago, Motul introduced ‘NGEN’ into the market — a range which brought the most sustainable lubricants to the automotive sector, re-using high grade motor oil and its packaging in its products, while ensuring no drop-off of performance over conventionally sourced products. The technology which covers all products that use re-refined base oils (RRBO) has been named NGEN Core and Motul’s aim is to have its entire range of lubricants offering the user both optimum performance and sustainability in one package. Now Motul has decided to bring NGEN Core it into its entire product range. Motul said it was the first company to bring multigrade oils to the market along with semi-synthetic and fully synthetic motor oils, and is a leading force in bringing innovation into the automotive lubricant sector. These advances have single-handedly shaped the vehicle lubricants markets for the last 75 years, Motul said. Now NGEN Core tech allows motorists, motorcyclists and commercial vehicle drivers to be on the roads with no compromise on performance, while at the same time making notably less impact on the environment. RRBO products are said to reduce carbon emissions by 40% compared to virgin base oils. Oils used in NGEN Core formulations are derived from premium used oils, re-refined through processes such as hydrotreatment and vacuum distillation. Re-refining oil is a complex multi-stage process, with some 10 stages and, as quickly becomes obvious, the finished product is certainly not just ‘recycled oil’. Andy Wait, head of Motul’s UK and Ireland business, said: “We wanted to dispel the myth that re-using oil will somehow produce an inferior product and our NGEN Core technology is a million miles from some perceptions of recycled oil. “The processes and technology we use ensures purity and performance that are at least equal to — and in some respects greater than — those of virgin base oils.” Beyond the formulation itself, NGEN Core packaging incorporates 50% recycled plastic (PCR) bottles. Motul intends to increase this to as much as 75% PCR by 2027. Sales of new NGEN Core products start this year leading with some of its motorcycle ranges — the 5000, 6000 and 7100 — before introducing its first NGEN Core PCMO products later in the year. Motul said NGEN Core is not simply another piece of trailblazing by the company but an important milestone on its strategic roadmap. www.motul.com Dispelling the myth that re-using oil will lead to an inferior product
