Top Apprentice, is the UK’s newest competition designed to recognise and reward the next generation of automotive talent. Open to Level 2 and Level 3 apprentices from colleges and academies across the UK, the competition shines a spotlight on developing technicians who demonstrate exceptional skill, attitude, and potential. This contest followed a multi-stage format designed to challenge young technicians and highlight their growth. Rounds 1 & 2 included online knowledge assessment focused on fundamental vehicle systems, diagnostics, and workshop safety. On finals day, the top five contestants face an in-person challenge, each facing five 30-minute practical tasks. Judging is carried out by a respected panel of experts, including trainers and industry specialists all passionate about supporting the next generation — with the panel led by Colin Denton. Denton is the star of TV’s Classic Car Garage, chief executive of the North London Garages Group Training Association and a passionate champion of apprenticeships and training. He told Aftermarket: “As a former motor vehicle apprentice, I can appreciate the hard work and dedication each apprentice must show if they want to become a qualified motor vehicle technician.” The judges have been looking for a strong understanding of automotive fundamentals, safe and professional working practices, logical and structured thinking and enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. It’s not just about getting everything right — it’s about showing potential, passion, and a real commitment to developing as a professional. The finalists stand out for their determination, positive attitude, and technical curiosity, challenging themselves, and embodying the values that make the aftermarket thrive — teamwork, integrity, and passion for the craft. Finalists and winners gain national recognition within the industry, the chance to network with employers, trainers, and sponsors, have access to career opportunities and mentorship and gives them a strong addition to their CVs and professional credibility. Many will go on to become fully qualified technicians, workshop leaders, and mentors to the next generation.
