Designed to provide clear, practical guidance, the session highlights the key steps to diagnose and prevent premature clutch failure. Presented by Valeo technical trainer, Stewart Lynch, the module takes viewers through the common issues technicians encounter when inspecting a removed clutch. “Grease contamination on the friction disc is one of the most common culprits,” Lynch said. “It can cause slippage, reduce power transmission efficiency, and accelerate wear. Think of it like trying to sprint in greased-up shoes, it’s not going to end well.” The training also covers essential workshop practices, such as supporting the gearbox correctly during removal and refitment. Improper handling can cause misalignment, putting extra stress on the clutch components and leading to early failure. Technicians are guided on inspecting oil seals, clutch return straps, input shaft and clutch hub grooves, and the clutch hydraulic command system, all crucial for smooth, reliable clutch performance. “By understanding the visual signs of defects and addressing them promptly, garages can prevent unnecessary breakdowns and avoid costly comebacks,” Lynch said. “It’s about doing the job right the first time and keeping customers satisfied.” The module is part of Valeo Tech Academy’s growing library of free, IMI-certified training content, which covers everything from traditional maintenance and repair to hybrid and electric vehicle systems, as well as ADAS. Courses are designed to be engaging and interactive, with gamified elements and assessments to help technicians track their progress. Complementary resources are also available via Valeo Tech Assist, including fitting guides, technical bulletins, tips and tricks. In addition, technicians can earn rewards through the Valeo Specialist Club loyalty programme. Valeo told Aftermarket last November that courses provided by its academy would help reduce skills shortages in the auto sector, particularly around work with EVs and ADAS. The automotive aftermarket specialist’s academy boasts more than 50 hours of material covering EVs and hybrid vehicles, taking in security basics, advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting. ADAScentred content adds further hours of training.
