Inspect the right-hand driveshaft area. Rust stains can usually be found between the insert and driveshafts due to lack of lubrication. The shaft splines will have become worn and will not mesh. Grease applied when the vehicle was made can leak or dry out. Failure may be due to transmission removal and repair if fresh grease was not used. Solution Drain transmission oil, remove the right-hand front wheel. Remove the driveshaft and inspect. Loosen the retaining bolt using a counter hold tool. Remove the insert shaft and inspect for broken parts (the brass ring may have fractured). Remove any debris then remove the driveshaft oil seal. Apply a high temperature, multi-purpose EP grease (21909) to the new seal, filling the space between the sealing lips. Install the new insert shaft and tighten the retaining bolt to 25Nm (5-speed 02Z transmission) or 35Nm (6-speed 0A5 Transmission). For the 5-speed, febi shaft oil seal 180889 is suitable. For the 6-speed, use febi shaft oil seal 182090. Fill the transmission with the correct grade of fresh oil. Apply a high temperature, multi-purpose EP grease to the mating surfaces of the insert and driveshafts. Install the new assembly. Tighten all fixings to recommended settings.
