Winter checks 40 www.aftermarketonline.net DECEMBER/JANUARY 2025 Check, mate! Do customers and yourself a service Winter checks are good for customers, good for business. And you can make this service even more profitable if you add in top-tier additives for customers to buy for their vehicle in between servicing and repairs. So, you get a double whammy — using trusted additives and charging for them as part of the winter service check and selling multiples for customers to take away. This does beg the question, why use high quality trade trusted formulas that cost more than the bargain basement products flooding the market? There are two compelling reasons. Firstly, additives are an extension of your brand. If you position yourself as a workshop that can be trusted to deliver the highest possible levels of expertise, experience and all-round services it makes business sense to do likewise with the additives you use, recommend and sell. Choosing cheap creates a disconnect with your brand values and how customers perceive your brand. Crucially, a cheap product is likely to have very little or none of the active ingredients. Customers benefit Secondly, top-tier additives are a fraction of the cost of a replacement part. So, when you can make a repair with a product and not a part, your customers benefit with a smaller bill (as does the environment). Like central heating, cars become more problematic during the winter months and for customers reliant on their vehicle, letting it rust on the driveway is not an option. But by the same token, they want the reassurance that when they entrust their vehicle to a garage it is in safe, reliable and expert hands. And they can afford the bill. Research by Castrol has revealed that 51% of motorists would be happy for their workshop to upsell more expensive, premium-quality consumables if the benefits were explained to them. Only 11% said they would always want the cheapest available consumables to be used. Meanwhile, 20% said they would want the workshop to always use premium-quality consumables in all circumstances and would not expect to be consulted. And another headline for workshops that are not capitalising on rich and frequent customer contact: only 40% of motorists are typically contacted by their workshop between vehicle services to discuss any work that might need to be carried out before their next scheduled visit. Are you missing out by not offering these essential seasonal checks? “It’s access all areas for additives today,” according to Mike Schlup from JLM Lubricants UK. Revenue generation “They tick a box for the motorist who knows they must keep their vehicle in tip top condition especially in the winter. For the workshop, additives offer valuable revenue-generating opportunities; used at the point of servicing, maintenance and repair. And, purchased by the customer in multiple units all year round.” If you are putting your winter checks services together or are simply looking at how you can make every interaction with a customer more profitable, consider the following additives from JLM Lubricants.
