MAY 2024 AFTERMARKET 45 www.aftermarketonline.net engine oil free of contaminants. Schlup said regular servicing and using a top spec engine flush such as JLM Engine Oil Flush is essential. “This product cleans aged and dirty engine oil systems quickly and effectively, especially where failing DPFs contribute to the oil contamination, improving engine performance and reducing fuel consumption.” In addition, Schlup said a quarterly dose of JLM Lubricants’ Emission Reduction Treatment helps to reduce the emissions’ load on the EGR and DPF by targeting all parts of the fuel, combustion, and exhaust system. “It’s much cheaper than using premium fuel. If the engine or DPF do become heavily contaminated, then the JLM DPF Cleaning Toolkit plus a dose of the JLM Diesel Extreme Clean will restore performance and cut emissions.” Keeping engines clean is important if vehicles are to be free of sludge and dirt. Modern engines’ reduced sump capacities, higher temperatures and extended drain intervals make the oil work harder than ever, hence why modern synthetic blends require high-grade base stocks and increasingly complex additive packs to fulfil their protective qualities. Depletion of these chemicals means that the oil is unable to adequately defend the engine. “So, combustion by-products become prolific, creating contamination, by separating from the oil and accumulating within the crank case,” Schlup said. A further cause of oil degradation is oxygen reacting with it. Oxidation increases oil viscosity and promotes varnish and sludge. As with most chemical reactions, oxidisation accelerates with temperature, with the rate doubling for every 10°C the lubricant reaches over 75°C. Other issues affect oxidisation rates with top-end deposit issues causing neat fuel to wash down the cylinder bores polluting the oil. Generally, engine lubricants can tolerate up to 3% of fuel contamination before their viscosity becomes compromised. But whatever the cause, oxidised oil promotes sludge and associated deposits. Schlup said this highlights the importance of strict adherence to service intervals and selecting the correct lubricant. “Today’s technicians are working in an increasingly diagnostics driven environment. They understand the vital role that premium additives and toolkits play in their workshop. “They’re also an important part of the ‘repair over replace and products over parts’ movement. And this can only be good news for every one of us with a stake in this thriving sector.” To find out more: www.jlmlubricants.co.uk Left: Bentley oil flush
