If you think you can do something, then you can probably do it. Alternatively, if you think the challenge is worthwhile, then maybe you will succeed. With this in mind, if you think you are running one of the best workshops in the country, there is still time to enter Top Garage 2022. Turn to page 24 to find out more. Just before that, on page 22, we hear from Top Technician and Top Garage sponsors TechMan about their ongoing support for the competitions. Speaking of support, another sponsor has joined the fray for 2022, with Motul joining Snap-on, VARTA, Blue Print and febi bilstein and the aforementioned TechMan as sponsors for 2022. You can read more in our news section, on pages 4-7. Staying in a Top Technician state of mind, we visited 2021 Top Tech runner-up Simon Parkinson this month, to find out about his new business and how it is going. You can read up on that on pages 58-59. His speciality is vehicle electrics and electronics. These days, when you say vehicle electrics, one eventually makes a rather haphazard jump to EVs, a very different topic. Does anyone really make this leap? I doubt it, but I’m the Editor, not you, so I’m doing it anyway in order to point you towards our look at the government’s Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy, which was announced a few weeks ago. Turn to Big Issue on pages 8-11 to find out what the sector thinks about all of this. Just after that, on pages 12-15 we collate the sector’s response to the recent Spring Statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer. On the business side, we also have the concluding part of Adam Bernstein’s piece looking at how to beat the hacker. That is on page 16. From the technical side, we have our first proper Aftermarket of the Future, from Neil Kennett, where he looks at all the latest on autonomous vehicles and other leading-edge tech. That is on pages 26-27. Then we speak to one of the experts at BorgWarner regarding EGR valves. That is on pages 28-29. Frank Massey’s ongoing examination of process, not problems, is on pages 30-31, while Snap-on’s Damien Coleman gets calibrating on pages 32-35. Ryan Colley discusses powertrain vehicle networking on pages 36-37, while on pages 38-39, Andrew Marsh looks at what sort of chaos might ensue as the internal combustion engine slips down the priority ladder for VMs. This section rounds up with Kalimex, discussing DPF Doctor Network founder Darren Darling’s trip to Australia. That is on pages 40-41. What else is there? We also have features on air conditioning, additives and cleaners, remanufactured components and tyres and tyre bay. While on our travels this month, we were able to attend Autotech Group’s Talent Recharge event, which took place to facilitate discussion around the skills shortage. You can read about that on pages 56-57. We also touch upon this back in news, where we cover the publication of the IMI Diversity Task Force Report, which examines the reasons why so many groups are under-represented in our industry and offers measures to mitigate this. So, what is the 51st state of mind? I’m not sure there is such a thing, but I liked the sound of it, and as this is my 51st edition of Aftermarket as Editor, I thought I would use it. See? The can-do attitude in action!
