W ith the 2030 deadline just eight years away, diesel vehicles remain a major part of the UK car parc, particularly in the second-hand arena. Garages that can effectively address diesel issues will be able to provide a fully rounded service for their customers. Mike Schlup, MD at Kalimex, the UK distributors for JLM Lubricants, commented: “Recent statistics show that there are over 11 million diesel cars in the UK, well over a third of all the registered vehicles currently on the road. Yes, sales of new diesel cars are declining and will end in 2030 but there is, and will continue to be, a huge demand for diesel vehicle maintenance, including well after the ban.” He continued: “At the same time, diesel engines are becoming increasingly complex in how they manage emissions, with a variety of systems built into the engine and exhaust aimed at trapping particulates and eliminating harmful gases. In fact, a properly functioning diesel engine has very low emissions which is great for the environment. However, the drawback is that the emissions control components can easily become contaminated, leading to blockages and failures, sometimes at significant yet unnecessary cost to the motorist. “A regular preventative maintenance programme can help to avoid some of these problems. This can include keeping in touch with your customers to make sure they follow their service schedule, especially on oil changes, plus, introducing an engine cleaning system such as the JLM Diesel Intake Extreme Clean Toolkit, and using quality professional additives to maintain the engine and exhaust. This will help to prevent future failures and prolong the life 48 AFTERMARKET FEBRUARY 2022 DIESEL www.aftermarketonline.net Awareness of the issues prevalent in diesel engines, as well as the benefits offered by additives will help you turn this into a profit centre DIESEL: DRINK DEEP and efficiency of the vehicle. The old adage of giving the car a good thrash down the motorway just doesn’t cut it anymore. If you are not sure about the reasons behind a particular fault then I would strongly recommend contacting a local specialist, such as The DPF Doctor. This will ensure that your customer gets expert advice, and a swift and cost-effective resolution to their problem. Your customers will thank you for it and keep returning to you for all their other servicing requirements, whereas incorrect diagnosis and treatment can easily lead to unnecessary and expensive damage, including destroying the DPF, leaving you with an unwanted headache.” Mike concluded: “Look after your diesel customers, build a relationship with your local diesel specialist if necessary, and diesels will continue to deliver you valuable revenue for many years to come.” For more information visit www.jlmlubricants.com and www.the-dpf-doctor.com Preventative maintenance LIQUI MOLY also offers a cleaner for DPFs.
