FEBRUARY 2022 AFTERMARKET 47 Matched When working with brakes, Stefano said it is best to think of the system as a whole: “When workshops handle pad or disc replacements, they often consider these two parts as quite separate from each other, and order and fit them accordingly. However, research and testing at Brembo has highlighted that brake pads matched with counterpart brake discs, collectively developed by the same manufacturer, can achieve better braking performance than pads and discs from different types of pads or different makers. Brembo brake pads and discs are designed to work in combination. Their overall braking performance is also tested and perfected together. What’s more, although Xtra brake pads are designed specifically for use with Brembo Max or Xtra brake discs, they also deliver significant performance benefits when paired with standard types of disc.” Specifications Meanwhile, MEYLE ‘s brake portfolio now includes almost 3,000 brake discs and pads. Niklas Arndt, Product Manager for the Brake Division at MEYLE commented: "A lot of time and effort goes into researching, developing and preparing the specifications for our MEYLE-PD parts. The data collection and research involved is very detailed and takes place at different levels. This is how we ensure that we have a complete overview of all the important factors and measured values that we need for a new design. A time-consuming additional effort, but definitely worth it for our customers.” In addition to market requirements, MEYLE also keeps an eye on international regulations and developments. Niklas continued: “MEYLE brake components were already tested and certified in accordance with EU Directive ECE R 90 before it even came into force across the board. MEYLE-PD brake pads, too, are an example of MEYLE's comprehensive engineering approach. While regulations will soon come into force in the USA that will reduce or completely ban residual copper, heavy metal and asbestos in brake components, MEYLE-PD brake pads already meet the requirements for this.” Brake checks Brake parts inevitably wear out, and according to a brake expert from Bosch, mechanics should check functionality and possible wear and tear at every opportunity: “Whenever the vehicle comes into the workshop, mechanics should take a look at the pads. During the visual Whenever a vehicle comes into the workshop, mechanics should take a look at the brake pads ” inspection, a friction material thickness of 2–3mm can be considered a reasonable guidance to replacement. Brake pads in general have to be replaced twice as often as the brake discs themselves.” Most mechanics are used to braking systems, but such familiarity can become a problem: “This can increase the risk of working too fast or skipping important steps such as cleaning all required parts. It is also important to use new accessories. Old components can be dirty, corroded or defective. Installation errors can be avoided by using the ESI[tronic] 2.0 online workshop software.” On calipers, Bosch’s expert said: “Brake calipers often last as long as the entire vehicle itself. Nevertheless, they wear and must be checked every time the brake system is serviced, repaired or modified, especially in case the vehicle is equipped with floating brake calipers. Poor brake caliper sliding can also lead to inefficiency in braking and blockage. Wear on the brake pads sometimes indicate caliper problems. Wear differences between the right and left side of the vehicle often indicate a faulty brake caliper. In this case, the calipers must be checked if they are partially blocked, or no longer slide properly. They should also be clean. If necessary, a brake caliper repair kit can be used.” Commenting on Bosch eXchange brake calipers, Bosch’s expert said: “During the series remanufacturing of brake calipers, all assemblies are checked and revised. This includes the operation of the handbrake, its adjustment unit, the caliper housing and pistons. Certain components such as the piston, the seal and the dust cover are always completely replaced by new parts.” www.aftermarketonline.net Below: MEYLE PD brake pad
