A ccording to Brian Urup, Country Manager for the UK at Borg Automotive, remanufactured components can really help garages in the current climate: “Remanufacturing offers many benefits including the functionality, performance, and look of original automotive parts. In addition to this, the energy used for remanufacturing is reduced by up to 80% compared to manufacturing of a new part, and the environmental impact of scrapping is also significantly reduced. This makes remanufacturing an important part of the circular economy. Furthermore, BORG Automotive offers a wide range of each product within their portfolio, which means they are available for almost any car in virtually no time as BORG Automotive also established a professional logistics network.” Offering Commenting on what BORG Automotive brings to the table, Brian said: “BORG Automotive offers nine different product groups; starters, alternators, A/C compressors, turbochargers, EGR valves, brake calipers, steering racks, steering pumps and steering columns. All of these are remanufactured at our own production sites in Poland, UK and Spain. BORG only uses OEM parts for remanufacturing and all are remanufactured to match their original standard.” On support for customers, Brian observed: “We know how much it means garages that our products can be installed quickly and easily. Therefore, many of our products are delivered as a plug-and-play system, which ensures that our products are equipped with the necessary components for an easy installation. Our trouble-shooting guidelines are available at our web shops and we also offer technical product training to our customers.” On fitment, Brian added: “When replacing a unit, it is important to match the OE number on the old unit to that of the purchased unit. More often than not, there are several product numbers available, for the same vehicle model and engine. Failing to match the OE number, the customer is at risk of receiving a unit that fails to communicate with the car, and thus will not work properly. To help our customers select the right model, we have developed a model search system on our web shop, where it is possible to search on the OE number and then get the right unit for that specific number. We put a lot of effort into securing and quality checking that all data is correct.” Life cycle Tomasz Lukaszek, Senior Operations Manager, Remanufacturing at BorgWarner said: “Industry experts estimate that remanufacturing products use 55% to 85% 40 AFTERMARKET MAY 2021 REMANUFACTURED COMPONENTS www.aftermarketonline.net With tight budgets to the fore in 2021, the fact that many key components can be remanufactured is providing an option and an edge for you and your customers RE-FORGED FOR A NEW ERA less energy compared to new component production. When considering the product life cycle, remanufacturing enables a single part to have more than one life and, in many instances multiple lives, which results in a considerable saving of raw materials. Remanufacturing of aluminium, iron, steel and nickel-based components saves the world’s natural resources for future generations and the reduced energy consumption positively contributes to improved air quality and a reduction of greenhouse gases. Sustainability is an essential part of BorgWarner’s vision for a clean and energy-efficient world and providing REMAN solutions is a key contributor to these goals.” Tomasz continued: “BorgWarner has been providing its customers with Remanufactured products over the last 30 years. The company has developed extensive expertise in remanufacturing a variety of products and the REMAN engineering teams are continuously looking for ways to recover more of the original components contained in the products. Current REMAN aftermarket offerings include an extensive turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) product range as well as remanufactured all-makes diesel injectors and pumps.” Commercial advantage The popularity of remanufactured components is growing, according to David Eszenyi, Commercial Director at Ivor Searle: “An increasing number of independent garages are recognising the commercial advantage offered by remanufactured major units. Typically costing around 40% less than a brand new OEM product, quality remanufactured products offer workshops a competitive edge in today’s price-sensitive repair market and an attractive proposition for their customers in term of price point. However, while it‘s more economical to source a remanufactured product, quality is a key consideration when choosing a supplier.
