If contamination builds, the turbo will no longer function correctly resulting in a loss of performance, higher fuel consumption and increased emissions. Eventually it will fail prematurely resulting in a costly and probably unnecessary replacement. A preventative regime aimed at keeping the turbo clean, even under poor driving conditions, will help protect it, maintain vehicle performance, and avoid premature failure. “Using a professional quality turbo cleaning additive on a regular basis will help protect the turbo, so it should be part of an ongoing workshop service programme especially for customers running low mileage or short journey diesels. Replacing a turbo is not always the best solution, especially when customers are feeling the pinch as is the case now. Firstly, it physically reduces friction in the engine because it contains tiny ceramic particles that spread out on the metal surfaces in a protective manner, thereby reducing direct contact between metal and metal. These ceramic particles are so tiny that they easily pass through the oil filter and even the very smallest oil holes. Secondly, Cera Tec chemically reduces friction in the engine because it contains so-called friction modifiers that chemically smooth the metal surfaces.” He added: “Not only does the engine as a whole benefit from these characteristics, the turbocharger does, too.
